Romanian term
boarfe
Romanian to English
Social Sciences
History
Traduc un text istoric despre cămătari, iar fraza sună cam aşa:
„În contul unei datorii mai vechi, [cămătarul] ridică de la un boier nişte 'boarfe', fără a mai găsi altceva de valoare.”
Dat fiind că şi „boarfe” e citat din documentele vremii, m-ar interesa un termen mai arhaic. Mulţumesc.

Este şi verb, şi substantiv, sinonim cu 'jumble' şi celelalte variante propuse. Într-un dicţionar Collins este dată explicaţia: 'old and unwanted things that people give away, especially to a charity, to be sold'. Iar în altul, ro-en, 'boarfe, vechituri':

"Rags" se refera la haine/tesaturi, deci in acest sens se potriveste. Dar "boarfe" poate sa includa si incaltaminte, obiecte de uz personal, orice "bulendre". Nu am gasit "rummage" ca substantiv cu acest sens in Cambridge si MacMillan:

apparel
Boier fiind, probabil că nu se îmbrăca în zdrenţe. De fapt, se menţionează clar că erau singurul lucru de valoare.
Example sentence:
The apparel oft proclaims the man [William Shakespeare, Hamlet]
