I am an associate member of the ITI (Institute of Translation and Interpreting). I have on many occasions looked into full membership but never seem to find the time to jump through the requisite hoops.
I used to be a member of the IOL (Institute of Linguists) but my membership lapsed and I haven't really seen any reason to rejoin.
Personally, I've gained much more out of online communities than 'real life' associations.

I agree. Being a part of online networks and using the Internet positively for professional purposes has made a huge difference to the way I work in the past six years, and there have been immense improvements on all fronts. There are some translators' associations that do a lot for their members and are worth joining, but there's a lot of politics involved too - at least, that's the impression I get.

Unless you count proz.
You have to PAY for them you see, and the advantages of membership never seem to me to outweigh the cost involved.

One, the Belgian Chamber of Translators and Interpreters.
I think most translators underestimate what professional associations can do for our profession. The first things that come to my mind are sensibilisation of the business world to the problems and needs of the translation world, guidance for young translators, organization of training courses, etc.

I used to be a member of ATIM, which in turn was a member of FIT, but the former seems to have disappeared.
I also used to be a member of the CBTIP (Belgian Chamber) but decided to carefully avoid a bunch of grumpy (bureaucratic) people there, when fees all of a sudden became much more expensive. For the record, I still am in contact and have good relations with the more open and constructive members of the CBTIP... on private grounds only.

The American Translators Association and the International Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters (not to be confounded with the International Association of Translators and Interpreters).

The benefits include a bi-monthly magazine and... er... well it just looks good, okay!?
Basically it’s a (relatively) easy way to get some extra letters after your name and provides a much-needed boost to your translator-ego.

Exactly. I would like to become a member of the German BDÜ purely for marketing reasons, but they require either a translator's diploma, another certificate on things not relevant for my specialization (Chamber of Commerce) or seven years of professional experience. I'm not there yet.

What do they really do for you ? And belonging to a association will not say that you are 'better' ! To be honest, I do not at all understand all these forms to 'support' you. They cost a lot of money.
The best way is to 'sell' yourself to companies you like to work for.
I even donot like the unpersonal, arrogant behaving of agencies who 'call you Friday at 17h' to ask you for a translation project for Monday morning, if on the first page of your website is mentione... Same as Attila.
I belong to the first one for marketing reasons (I'm ATA certified so I have to keep paying membership not to loose certificaton  ).
And I belong to the second one to support our profession against the global downward trends. Besides, membership costs 1/3 of ATA's.
