I've just received an email from the Global Translation Institute of Portland, Oregon, offering a self-paced course in translation for the "bargain price" of $227 for those who sign up by 4th January 2013. I've just received an email from the Global Translation Institute of Portland, Oregon, offering a self-paced course in translation for the "bargain price" of $227 for those who sign up by 4th January 2013. I'm not considering enrolling myself but I'm wondering if anyone has ever heard of this Institute and the courses it offers and whether the certificate it says that it awards on completion of the course would be of any value. Is this just another way of exploiting the freelance translation business? Am I getting altogether too cynical? I'd be interested in the views of translator colleagues. Jenny ▲ Collapse

Personally I would only enroll in training and/or certification from recognised schools and universities or from translator organisations who issue a recognised diploma or certificate.
As discussed in many proz.com fora in the past, the "Global Translation Institute" is one of the many faces of a company offering training material and courses for a number of industries, and whose diploma is not recognised officially in our industry as far as I am aware. ▲ Collapse

Thank you, Tomás and Karen. I didn't realise this institute had been discussed here before. I apologise. An extremely interesting article Karen, which I'll read in full when I'm less pressed. From what I've read of it before, the article assesses the Global Translation Institute, others like it and their certificates as of little value. Happy new year to all, Jenny
