Hi.
I've been working as trainee interpreter since last october, translating lessons in a school, however I've never done any other kind of interpretation job. Now I've have been asked to be the interpreter during a meeting (two people, lunch time) of three hours, translating italian to english /english to italian. Since it would be my first real interpreting job I have no idea how much to charge for three hours of inteprreting.

1/2 a day (travel etc?) 250-300 + expenses
May 15, 2013
Or more depending on the complexity of the talks (+ you cannot eat yourself during lunch probably), if this is an end-client. Basically - you will not be able to take any other work during that day, so you may even go up to 400-500. (If the people can understand eachother OK (the Italian speaks English) you may not need to work hard...

It depends on the type of interpreting
May 15, 2013
Simultaneous interpreting is much more complex and thus better paid -- usually $500-800 a day in the US. You should interpret for 45 minutes and then rest for at least twenty.
Consecutive interpreting is less stressful, and thus not paid at such high rates.
It is usually paid around $250-$400 a day,in the US.
As a beginner, I think you should charge approximately $150.

Eat first!
May 17, 2013
Hi Martina,
I'm not an interpreter, but from having read a number of nightmare stories by colleagues who are, I know that a major issue is to make sure you eat before you arrive for the assignment. The fact that it's at lunch time means nothing. You will not get to eat a single thing, because you will be speaking or listening the whole time!
Hope it goes well for you.
Jane
