I lived in Belgium for 30 years, where movies are subtitled in two languages: French and Flemish. So, I learned to avoid looking at subtitles if I know the language, I only look when I can’t understand what is being said. To be fair to subtitlers not all subtitles are poorly translated, some are even excellent considering the limits of time and space they have. I stopped "policing" subtitles some time ago, although I must admit I was watching something in English (my native language) with Spanish subtitles recently and did think that subtitler didn't know what some things meant, perhaps more due to the use of slang or the cultural nature of the context.

I can ignore subtitles when I don't need them, but I often follow in both languages anyway. Generally, the Danish subtitles when English is spoken are very good, although of course, it is the mistakes everyone remembers. I really enjoy when my English colleagues find neat solutions to Danish idioms, allusions and humour that are not obviousl to everyone else.

I use the subtitles a lot when watching German TV. I can read German, but I do not catch all the subtleties on the fly if I am only listening, especially if there is background noise or music, or where the dialect is different from my 'school' German.
On the other hand, with the meaning in the subtitles, I can often work out what was actually said, even when the subtitles are shorter or more 'standard' than the spoken version.
I am lost without subtitles for Swedish or Norwegian! I can read the languages and even translate from them as text, but the spoken language is completely different from Danish, which I speak and hear every day. This is common in Scandinavia - and people resort to speaking Scandi-English instead of their own languages when there are Danes, Swedes and Norwegians together. ▲ Collapse

I usually try to turn off my brain, but sometimes the errors "jump into" my eyes. And then there is a moment of analyzing what kind of error it is: just a skipped typo, accuracy etc )))

I’m sorry, I’m a Virgo, the analyst par excellence 😁 and also an audiovisual translator, so I don’t really have a chance to switch off the analysis 😂

occasionally 'just enjoy the movie' I can't switch off the inbuild wiring.
Whether I want it or not, I always 'automatically' spot errors / inconsistencies / the odd one out ... which can be very useful for doing any job, but can also be distracting.
Something to do with Low Latent Inhibition, apparently.
