Rautalankaviritys is often literally jerry-rigging something with a wire just to keep it in one piece for a while. Usually until you may (or may not) replace it with a better or the proper solution that you could/should have used or done in the first place.
Can refer to (usually) badly done, quick makeshift repairs.

And indeed, in many cases it doesn't mean the literal use of wire for jerry-rigging, of course, but just having to use more and more resources and one support feature after another, just to keep Item X working even at a basic level.
On the drive home, my muffler was dragging on the asphalt. I jerry-rigged it with a piece of wire and gaffers tape so it would stay in place until I had it repaired.
