"Dangle the bait" This is a fishing terminology, where bait (a worm or some item that looks like food) is stuck on a hook and put in water. It 'dangles' before the fish to attract them. If fish believe it to be food and attempt to eat it, they are caught by the hook...i.e. they've taken the bait. So something attractive/inciting/false used to lure someone into a trap is the metaphorical bait. مچھلی پکڑنے کے لیے کانٹے پر جو چیز لگا کر پانی میں پھینکی جاتی ہے اسے 'بیٹ' کہتے ہیں، اور کانٹے پر لگا کر مچھلیوں کو خوراک کا دھوکا دینے کا عمل 'ڈینگلنگ دی بیٹ' کہلاتا ہے، یعنی مجھلی کے سامنے کچھ پیش کردیا جسے وہ کچھ دیر مشاہدہ کرتی ہیں اور دھوکے میں آ جائیں تو منہہ مار کر کانٹے میں پھنس جاتی ہیں۔ یہ ' ٹیکنگ دی بیٹ' ہو گیا، یعنی وہ شکار بن جاتی ہیں۔
