Change log

Jan 16, 2013 20:36: Cristina Butas changed "Level" from "PRO" to "Non-PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (3): Florin Ular, Diana Coada (X), Cristina Butas

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Lara Barnett Jan 18, 2013:
@ Gabrielle "Except if he is out of the country" is incorrect. The correct English would be "could find him easily unless he is out of the country' and a comma is a bit unecessary.
Gabrielle Weatherhead Jan 18, 2013:
The Romanian is very informal here. It could be translated 'You could find him easily, except if he is out of the country' or 'unless he's out of the country'.
Dasa Suciu Jan 17, 2013:
Lara is somehow right because of the specific Romanian construction of the verb. In the reference posted below I'll try to make it clear.
Diana Coada (X) Jan 17, 2013:
Except if is incorrect, do not use it!
Lara Barnett Jan 17, 2013:
@ Costinro Maybe the source text is badly written, but I don't think that is a very professional reason to use the English incorrectly.
Lara Barnett Jan 17, 2013:
Except if This is incorrect use of grammar (in English) - for this particular context at least, and very clumsy elsewhere.
Florin Ular Jan 17, 2013:
Alexandranow Jan 17, 2013:
iată alte câteva posibilități

Alexandranow Jan 17, 2013:
but nu merge?
Nandor (asker) Jan 16, 2013:
CUMVA M-am gandit ca s-ar putea traduce concret cuvantul CUMVA ( in contextul mentionat)din DACA NU CUMVA! Daca nu= unless, asta stiam si eu!
Lara Barnett Jan 16, 2013:
@ Nandor Could you give some more context and what the problem is that you are having?

Unless he had left the country...

The presumptive mood is used in Romanian to express presupposition or hypothesis, regardless the fact denoted by the verb, as well as other more or less similar attitudes: doubt, curiosity, concern, condition, indifference, inevitability.

În lumina celor de mai sus, cred că se poate spune şi: Unless he might have left...

Am uitat să specific faptul că se va rezolva şi redarea în traducere a lui cumva (presupunere), dacă foloseşti construcţia cu prezumtiv: Unless he might have left...
