XTM does not accept tmx TM

I converted an SDL TM from sdltm to tmx. Done it countless times before. This time I keep getting this message:

"This is not a valid TMX file. Please make sure that it is well formed and try again.
errorMessage"

Any idea what could have gone wrong, why xtm won't process this one? TM runs just fine in SDL.
