For no apparent reason, both my external mouse (new in July) and the mouse on the PC keyboard (new HP PC in July, Windows 10 Home, Office 2019) started to simply block the current paragraph instead of just going to the text waiting for me to type or execute a command. Impossible to write, in other words. I then went to try and Google the problem, and when I clicked on the box it just brought up the last searches, and wouldn't let me write there either.

Just before this happened it seemed to have started typing in upper case without Shift activated, and in lower case when Shift was activated ...

After the block thing started, I then rebooted, and it seems to have resolved itself, but does anyone know why this could be happening? Annoying, and also worrying.

Too much blargh Oct 11, 2020

This may happen occasionally, when there is too much blargh to translate. Computers can only take that much before locking horns and caps locks. Alas, the only known cure is to reduce the blargh in your life…

On a less serious note, if it happened only once, and disappeared after a restart, I don't thing you need to worry. If the computer is acting up often however, it could more serious, either OS/user related (test on a new Windows user or use an earlier Windows restore point?)

Is it a wireless mouse? Oct 11, 2020

If yes, maybe it is just a question of replacing the battery? I bought a new wireless mouse a couple months ago, and it turned out to be so gluttonous that the battery must be replaced every three weeks on average.

Also, I would check the support section at HP website.

That blaargh Oct 11, 2020

Thanks, Jean!

Indeed, large volumes of blaargh probably throw a spanner in the works. But then again, it shouldn't happen to a new computer. The old one was leaking blaargh out the sides after five years of relentless input.

I tend (want, yearn!) to agree with you that a one-off means nothing. You pick up a lighter to light your fag or light the gas in the kitchen, and you spark it. Nothing happens. You spark it again, and it works. Why didn't it work the first time? Wh

Battery Oct 11, 2020

Thanks, Natalie! That one had occurred to me when I googled a load of suggestions. I also see now that, unlike the other PC's, this all-new, up-to-date mouse doesn't seem to have a blinking red "change-me-real-soon" light.

The mouse works fine and then suddenly stops working.

My cat usually deals with the external mice, so they generally don't bother me. She likes them a lot.

In which software does the problem occur? A CAT tool, Office, Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Edge or something else?

You said, 'instead of just going to the text waiting for me to type or execute a command,' but it's not entirely clear what this means, because you say that the mouse should go to text waiting for you to type, but if there is any text it can go to, it would imply that it had already been typed, in which case it would be redundant for you to type it. Of course, you may want to type it again just to be sure you got it right. Some people just can't be too careful. Or perhaps you meant that the mouse should go to the space where you intended to type more text.

As for executing a command, how, more precisely, are you trying to execute it?

A few times, it has happened on my own Windows 10 that I could not enter anything into Microsoft software UIs such as Edge and system interfaces. The problem is known, but I could not find any identified cause. Some people suspected that non-Microsoft software or drivers caused it, but in that case, how would we know which?

As far as I remember, one of the solutions proposed at https://ugetfix.com/ask/how-to-fix-windows-10-apps-if-they-dont-allow-typing/ fixed it. I had saved the link and that's always a strong indication that I found it useful.

You said it was a fairly new PC. They are often full of junkware when delivered and it’s a good idea to uninstall any junkware you don’t need. I got mine from PC Specialist in the UK. They only deliver a raw Windows system, so there’s nothing to clean up when you receive it.

You can perform a test of your components using this feature in HP machines. I know, sometimes, it is useless.
I had a more serious problem a few months ago, my wireless mouse and keyboard simply stopped working.
The keyboard only works wired and I offered the mouse "unforgettable vacations" for a few days. One day, I decided to test it, and it is working again. The poor one was tired...

... Wasn't that Sylvester the Cat's line?

Anyway, thanks, Thomas and expressisverbis. I know it's a cliché, but it all happened so fast, I can't actually remember the sequence of events.

It also strikes me it could be Offalburger messing around at the White House.

As the same thing happens with the "keyboard mouse" and the external one, maybe the problem is elsewhere. Perhaps a sticky key, or a bad connection within the keyboard. The events you describe sound a bit like what happens when you click the mouse with the Shift key held down.

Could be Oct 12, 2020

Thanks a lot, Philip.

Your external/internal mouse logic occurred to me later. It could be involuntary Shift + Mouse, I suppose. It's a little embarrassing, since I know how to do most things because, like most people posting regularly here, I've been around a long time, but I wouldn't say I'm tech-savvy, and I probably just panicked initially because I'm on a huge job for Tuesday. Low-level panic, though, because at a pinch I could use the old computer as a temporary workaround. Mo

Low-level panic, though, because at a pinch I could use the old computer as a temporary workaround. Most stuff you can figure out because there are smart people on here, or on Google, but in this case I had to go to the old computer just to Google, even, before I rebooted and everything was fine again.

Used to be you just turned off a faulty appliance and turned it on again, and it worked, TVs back in the day, that kind of thing. Sometimes it's the same with computers.

Stuck keys? Oct 12, 2020

Sounds like your computer has some keys (or mouse buttons) stuck. Sometimes the only way to unstick the keys is to reboot. One thing that often works for me is to press Shift+Ctrl+Alt once or a few times. I'm not sure what to do when mouse buttons get stuck... pressing them simultaneously a few times, perhaps?

Did you recently install a program that may have hidden shortcut settings?

Thanks, Samuel.

No, no recent programmes installed. If it's not ghosts in the machine, it could be stickiness, but I can't find anything sticky, and in this case the solution certainly was to reboot, so I'm definitely happier about it now, because it hasn't come back. What I hate most is not knowing for sure.
