My gut feeling says it's a scam. Why contact a translator if you don't know what language pairs s/he works with? Also, I am suspicious of letters that don't address me by name.

Legit or scam?

Greetings,

Good day to you,i found your contact details on a registry of
translators and interpreters, while searching for a written translator to translate a term paper on my behalf.

Do you posses such such expertise?

I wouldn't even read it to that point. Seeing "to translate a term paper" would already be sufficient to consider it a dud.

Looking for a written translator - not even able to look up the word translator in a dictionary, or not knowing the difference between an interpreter and a translator!

This email sounds so vague, it was either written by someone who knows nothing about our professions, or it's a scam.

Yet, it seems that some potential clients/outsourcers don't (bother to) read an LPS's profile, else I wouldn't be receiving requests for interpretation services.

Did you check for the IP in your email client? Possibly a gmail account, I guess.

sounds like a total amateur Feb 20, 2016

who hasn't got a clue about language services [ a written translator?? as opposed to a talking translator?] trying to build a database of translators.

There is already enough middlemen with limited understanding of what is translating / interpreting & other language services, you don't want to have anything to do with/waste your time on a total nincompoop.

Delete/block buttons are what you need...

I don't read emails, which fail to mention my name, because emails without my name inside are not for me.

Thank you all. I practically had no doubts, but it's nice to have it confirmed.

Yes, it came from a gmail account. In fact, it is similar to what Lourdes posted:

As opposed to a talked translator, whatever kind of being this may be.

There is already enough middlemen with limited understanding of what is translating / interpreting & other language services, you don't want to have anything to do with/waste your time on a total nincompoop.

Total agree and thanks for enriching my English vocabulary, there's never enough epithets to call those.... kind of people, you know.

Definitely scam... Feb 22, 2016

D&F = Delete and Forget. Communication with sender is futile.

Edited to add this: Is you are not addressed in the email by your name, it is really pointless to answer (in any situation).

Besides ... Feb 22, 2016

If the person wants a term paper (or any particular document) translated, he should know what the source and target languages are that he needs, so why go to the bother of asking a blanket question such as what are your languages? Crazy!

Scam Feb 23, 2016

Clients (especially those who seem to be as naive as this person) do not generally use such terms of art as "target language" and "source language".
