Before I got interested in languages, I wanted to become a biologist or doctor. Later I developed a passion for languages and wanted to work with them. Everyone assumed I wanted to be a translator, but I was more interested in language teaching. While studying languages and linguistics at university, a hobby rekindled my interest in biology. However languages have remained my passion, so I went on to teach and translate.

Kid = 5, 10, 15 or 18 y.o.? Aug 30, 2018

Before 10, what you want to be doesn't make a difference. You want to be a soldier, a police officer, and athlete or other things that look like a hero. Hardly ever maitained after that.
From 10 to 15, you don't want to be anything, or you want to be something this week, and next week it will be something else.
From 16 on, you start thinking about concrete possibilities to decide what will be your college choice.
So I'm considering what I wanted to be as a "Kid" from 15 on.... See more

I always considered translation as a choice, but it wasn't my professional choice, and I didn't even thing about graduating in languages or anything like that. I'm very thankful for that now, since I only became a translator later and both my degree and my professional experience were a lot more valuable for my current profession than the traditional language/translation courses would have been.

Like Barbara, I decided I wanted to be a translator when I first started studying Spanish in school. I think I was 13 at the time.

The idea to translate did not really occur to me before I was 40 years old, or something in that range.

No - but I wanted to know lots of languages Aug 31, 2018

And I wanted to be a writer (or journalist)

So since I spend about 1/3 of my time writing (and getting some published too) and do know several languages, I guess one could say I'm living out my childhood dreams.
