Translating a pregnancy app, pregnancy blog, and baby app
During the course of a year, I have translated the number 1 pregnancy app Pregnancy+ from Health & Parenting into Dutch, as well as the blog articles contained in that app, and their baby app Baby+. It's been an absolute pleasure working on these texts and I am looking for more translating opportunities in the pregnancy and baby area.

I have worked on the Dutch translation of this app that can be used to recognise baby cries and provides learning materials on the matter. I also helped the customer finding other translators and managing the translations into the other languages.

The glamour world of international yachting might not at first glance seem to have much in common with the workday world of mining and energy, manufacturing, construction and heavy vehicle maintenance.
But down inside the hulls of some of the world’s biggest and sleekest racing yachts performance tuned by the Rig Pro operation of New Zealand’s XX company are bright yellow YY cylinders any worksite engineer would recognise. XX is a world leader in the design and construction of carbon fibre spars and components, rigging, and rig servicing. As the industry pioneer, XX built its first carbon spar in 1990.
These compact but extremely powerful YY 700 bar hydraulic cylinders, used to tension rigging on yachts including Americas Cup contenders, are the same rugged cylinders used by industry to hoist huge weights and to press, pull, form, fabricate and maintain plant and equipment ranging from bridges and buildings to trucks, turbines and production machinery.

Usually at some point during your first trimester, your doctor will recommend an ultrasound. Depending on how many weeks pregnant you are at the time of the ultrasound, the scan may be done either abdominally or through a transvaginal scan. An ultrasound can determine how far along you are, which provides you with a more accurate due date than counting from your last period. Your doctor will be able to see if there is more than one little bundle of joy in there.
Bad hair days during pregnancy
Lacklustre locks can also be an equally common pregnancy side effect. Hormonal changes can affect all areas of your body, even your hair. In some cases, those annoying hormones make your hair dry and dull looking.
Embarrassing pregnancy problems
Oh, boy. (Or girl). You had a great breakfast this morning, were feeling good, and then… you farted in the middle of a business meeting. Everyone looked at you, your face turned beet red, and you pointed to your belly as if to say, “It was the baby’s fault.” Truthfully, you weren’t totally off base there.
Itchy nipples are a real thing, and are the result of growing breast issue – but moisturising can help! And if you are having trouble leaking out urine between bathroom visits, you aren’t alone – but you might find relief with Kegels.
TENS machine
TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (rolls of the tongue, doesn’t it?). A maternity TENS machine is a hand-held controller attached to a number of sticky pads.
The Apgar score
Your prenatal teacher probably mentioned the Apgar score during your classes. APGAR stands for activity, pulse, grimace, appearance and respiration. These are the things being assessed.

Afhankelijk van het aantal weken dat je zwanger bent, wordt de echo uitwendig (via je buik) of inwendig (via de vagina) gemaakt. Met een echo wordt vastgesteld hoe ver je bent en kan een nauwkeurigere uitgerekende datum worden bepaald dan wanneer je rekent vanaf de eerste dag van je laatste menstruatie. De verloskundige zal je ook kunnen vertellen of je straks één of meerdere wondertjes mag verwelkomen.
'Bad hair days' tijdens de zwangerschap
Een ander veelvoorkomend zwangerschapskwaaltje zijn doffe lokken. Hormonale veranderingen beïnvloeden alle delen van je lichaam, ook je haar. Soms laten die vervelende hormonen je haar er droog en dof uitzien.
Gênante zwangerschapsproblemen
Jongens toch! (Of meisjes). Je had vanochtend heerlijk ontbeten, je voelde je goed en dan plots... liet je tijdens een belangrijke vergadering een serieuze wind. Iedereen staarde je aan, en met een gezicht zo rood als een tomaat wees jij verontschuldigend naar je buik, alsof je wilde zeggen: "Het ligt niet aan mij maar aan de baby." En eigenlijk is dat ook zo, je hebt het niet zomaar uit je duim gezogen.
Jeukende tepels, je kunt ze niet negeren. De jeuk wordt veroorzaakt door toenemend borstweefsel. Smeren met een hydraterende crème kan verlichting bieden! En als je last hebt van urineverlies tussen toiletbezoekjes door, weet dan dat je niet de enige bent en dat oefeningen voor je bekkenbodemspieren kunnen helpen.
TENS-apparaat
TENS staat voor Transcutane Elektrische Neuro Stimulatie (makkie, toch?). Een GeboorteTENS is een draagbaar apparaat dat met een aantal plakkers is verbonden.
De apgarscore
Je hebt tijdens je zwangerschapscursus vast over de apgarscore gehoord. APGAR staat voor Appearance (kleur), Pulse (hartslag), Grimace (reactie op prikkels), Activity (spierspanning) en Respiration (ademhaling). Dit zijn de vijf punten waarnaar wordt gekeken.

Translator since 2010 5+ years of experience as an inhouse translator/reviewer and project manager at a certified translation agency in the Netherlands Master's degree in Translation for the languages Russian and English into Dutch Previously obtained a Bachelor's degree in Social Work (with HRM specialisation)
It's my interest in other cultures and languages that inspired me to start with translation studies after graduating as a social worker (HRM specialisation). Apart from Russian and English, the languages I studied, I also know some French and Spanish.
After gaining ample experience and knowledge during the 5 years that I worked at a translation agency, I decided to become my own employer so that I could concentrate on translating. I love working on interesting projects in a variety of fields.
My main specialisation is maternal health care and anything releated to pregnancy, breastfeeding and babies, as I have translated an elaborate app and blog posts about pregnancy, as well as a baby app.
Other than that, I have experience with business communication (letters, emails, newsletters, intranet posts, ...), organisational psychology, management and HRM, but also websites, manuals for appliances, stairlifts, hydraulic tools, course manuals, a guide book for family caregivers, terms and conditions, board and card games, and much more.
I work with SDL Trados Studio 2017.
