Worked as a bus driver here in Uppsala, There were a fixed number of 'lists' (a nine-week schedule of duty assignments) which are assigned to individuals based on their choice and seniority -- where the more desirable lists were taken by the more senior employees. This covered most of the regular needs of the company. This left a pool of less senior drivers who were 'dagskommenderade' to fill in 1) for senior drivers absent from serving their duty assignment that day (for whatever reason) and 2) the duty assignments that were not included in the listed scheduled assignments. These drivers received their assignment less than 24 hours before they were to begin work. I'd say 'daily duty assignment' works ...

And I can see how it will be difficult to come up with a term in English for this!

Not quite day-to-day It is common in public transport, trams, buses, metro. Some of the employees have a contract for full or part time work, but they are allocated to specific routes and hours as requirements vary, with sickness etc. Some employers provide "dagkommenderade" workers with a time schedule several weeks ahead, some only one or a few days - can be a bone of contention between employers and unions.
