I've heard various ways of expressing this:
"political stage/scene" - very popular with the BBC
"political map"
"political landscape"
"political arena" (which retains the idea of competition/a battle)
As for "political chessboard", I'm not quite so keen on that one and I don't think it's very well established, but it could work as a figurative expression, I suppose.
