French term or phrase: .sb
Hi,

This comes at the end of the text in a birth certificate from France. It appears in the following context: "Nous, XXX, officier d'état civil, avons signé avec le déclarant.sb----------------------------".

No text comes after the ".sb" and I can't think what this could be. I have searched a number of online dictionaries and done some searching on Google but can't find anything. I was wondering whether this was typed by mistake but it seems a bit far-fetched.

If anybody has any ideas, they would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks!

Explanation:
An idea.

If the document has been scanned, ink from the reverse page can shine through, especially if the paper is old or thin. "de" in reverse would come out roughly as "sb" and could be picked up as such in a search. Further confusion could have been caused by the fact it then happens to appear immediately after the full stop after "le déclarant".

Have a look at this example of an old book digitized by Google and see what you think.

A text search for "sb" leads to page 269:
... ce qui est contraire à la loi.
immediately followed by reverse text, roughly:
... sb ls lob sb ...
This is text shining through from page 268:
... de dol et de ...
http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=ElUMAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA653&lpg...

I found this by doing a Google search for:
"avec le déclarant" + "sb"
leading to the following result:
Journal du palais - Google Books Result
books.google.co.uk/books?id=ElUMAQAAMAAJ...
France. Cour royale (Paris)., France. Cours d'appel, France. Cour de cassation - 1840 - Law

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you for your help. As per my discussion entry, I was unable to reach a definitive answer even with the help of the client. I have chosen the other answer as the "sb" was in lower case letters, which doesn't seem like initials and I thought the information on possible OCR errors would be useful for others in the future. Thanks again!
