the jury passes / delivers a verdict of not guilty having been instructed to do so by the judge
This refers to a directed verdict of not guilty. It means that the trial judge instructs the jury to find the accused not guilty because the prosecution has failed to prove its case as a matter of law.

"On his direction" means "on his orders". But formally, although the judge is telling the jury that they have no decision to make and must find the defendant not guilty, the verdict is still returned by the jury (in a trial by jury).

: But the judge does not direct a jury to deliver a certain verdict. The directions are to clarify the evidence the jury must weigh and the options for a verdict that would follow.//Yes I see, if there is insufficient evidence, there is nothing to weigh.

Thanks, Tina! This refers to cases in which the jury is ordered to acquit: "In a jury trial, a directed verdict is an order from the presiding judge to the jury to return a particular verdict" (Wikipedia). // That's it. Happy New Year!
