Explanation: Komt oorspronkelijk uit de hoefsmederij, een paard werd 'op scherp gezet', wat betekende dat de hoefijzers van het paard van ijzeren punten werd voorzien om het paard niet uit te laten glijden bij glad weer. In meer figuurlijke zin hangt het samen met een zeer verfijnd onderscheidingsvermogen, een soort maximale focus. Ik stel voor dicht bij de tekst te blijven en te kiezen voor 'to sharpen' en dan voor de actieve variant in tegenstelling tot de passieve. |
