Asker also painted a good picture of the situation, that is, gave very relevant info.

'stoutmoedig' should be understood as a humorous understatement (really 'brutaal')

As I interpret it, he's using his status, privileged position, as an author. The full context is as follows:

Houtsneden volgens den ouden trant
Aan het einde maakt X stoutmoedig gebruik van het podium wat hij heeft als auteur, hij fietst de emblemata erin. Maar hij beschrijft het natuurlijk anders: ‘houtsneden met titelblad, die volgens den ouden trant der ,,emblemata’’ op beknopte, zinnenrijke wijze bij moderne spreukverzen de verluchting zijn’.

Describes them in too much detail? Art is supposed to speak for itself. Art critics (read 'the author') will always have an urge to explain the artworks in detail. The better ones resist that urge. This one takes advantage of his role as an author to examine the artworks too closely. To cycle right in amongst them or dive into the water instead of looking at it from the beach.?

Can you expand on what "het podium wat hij heeft als auteur"means? Or provide us with more context?

He dives right in? If I did not have an awful lot of time to dither over it, and not being culturally and historically as cycling mad as the Dutch, I think in English we might say something like "He dives right into the emblems"...
