5 +3 | professional sparring |
|
professional sparring Explanation: Originally it was a boxing term - a sparring partner was a practice partner who would 'go through the motions' without landing heavy blows, to train one or both boxers in footwork, what reactions to expect from an opponent etc. without injury before the real match. It is used a good deal figuratively in other contexts, about positive criticism between friends and so on. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 15 hrs 24 mins (2003-10-21 05:50:27 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- It should be constructive criticism to use the normal collocation.
