The first stage AFLSI is a fast-response system (t=O.1 to O.3 sec) that operates in the range of 48.5-46.5 Hz. The function of the AFLSI is to prevent large frequency drop during the initial stage of a power failure by disconnecting the equal blocks of load that are connected to each of the available frequency settings.
The second stage ALFSII relay is designed to restore normal frequency if it remains at a low level or a standby mode for a long time, in case the additional active power deficit increases during an emergency.
