français term
la socio-esthétique
français vers anglais
Médecine
Médecine : soins de santé
Cancer support for women
Hi again,
I'm looking for an English equivalent of "la socio-esthétique". All the examples of the direct translation of this term which I saw on the Net seem to relate to art and aesthetics, and not to health care. The context is an association which helps women with their self image and self estime during and after cancer treatments and the like, including information on wigs, make-up and beauty tips, prostheses, etc. The article, entitled "LA SOCIO – ESTHÉTIQUE : QUALITÉ DE VIE ET IMAGE DE SOI" is written by a "socio-esthéticienne"...
Thanks in advance,
Dana

Esthetic therapy/Clinical cosmetology
Esthetic Therapy seems more geared to cancer patients,
whilst clinical cosmetology covers all sorts, but still all aimed at improving patients' self esteem[NOTE SPELLING: ESTEEM!], including dealing with scars, birthmarks, etc.
So, Clinical Cosmetology for an overall term;
Esthetic therapy more specifically for cancer patients, etc...

Please see below
type into Google "cancer + wigs + esthetics" and you'll find a lot of hits with various names. Type also " society and esthetics + cancer" and you'll find names like Society for esthetics or Institute for esthetics.
There's a lot of hits about "socioesthetics related to dance and music.
I don't know if there is a standard translation.

Looking good/looking your best
I don't think the concept of socio-esthétique translates well into English. "Socially acceptable/presentable appearance", e.g. sounds too prescriptive. The idea that you want to look good when you go out, when you meet other people, is more implicit and less formally expressed in English - though just as real.

There is a program in the US called "Look Good, Feel Better" - a free program for cancer patients to regain control over their appearance.

Another possibility:
Restoring appearance (or simply "appearance") and self-image Appearance is how you look in other's eyes - a different way of saying "socio-esthétique."

: Hein ? How do you get "ergotherapy" (better known as occupational therapy) out or "socio-esthétique"?//And chemotherapy usually goes along with radiotherapy as a treatment...so it's OK to translate "radiothérapie" as "chemotherapy"??

Because it usually comes along with it as treatment. Nope Richard, that's for the "socio" part.
