Dear Colleagues,

I'm a Spanish interpreter based in Barcelona. I'm seriously thinking about undertaking a Postgraduate or Masters in the States. I've been researching but I'm completely lost... Please, could you tell me which is, in your opinion, the best option?

Dear Colleagues,

My preferences are:

- Duration: 1 or 1 1/2 academic year
- Interpreting-focused rather than translation-focused
- I'll like it to be specialized (either Court Interpretation or Medical) although not essential.

I read here that University of Arizona is great for Court Interpreting, however its certification lasts only 3 weeks or so...

Thanks in advance

California Feb 4, 2008

I have heard that the Monterrey Institute of International Studies, in California, has a very good program.
A Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation. I have a friend who did her Master's there in Legal Interpretation. I have also taken a course with one of the professors, Holly Mikkelson, who is excellent.

Here is the link:

MIIS is excellent, but Feb 8, 2008

the program lasts 2 full years, and it's very expensive. Not to mention that arranging visas can be pretty difficult these days.

However, I am a graduate (1997, MA Translation) and I can definitely recommend the school. However, I am a graduate (1997, MA Translation) and I can definitely recommend the school. Apart from anything else, if you want to study conference interpreting, I believe it's the only master's program in CI you can do in the United States and the only educational institution with an auditorium fully set-up with simultaneous interpreting equipment and booths - at least that was the case when I went there.

Think long and hard about what you want out of this program. I knew going in that it would be expensive, but valued the reputation that the school had. I went in aiming to squeeze every last drop out of the experience, and I think I did. I never regretted paying back those loans, because the experience, knowledge, networking opportunities (the profs and alumni have amazing connections), etc. I gained were invaluable. Many of the interpreting students end up working for major government agencies/NGOs, so if that's your goal, it would definitely be the place to be.

Feel free to PM me if you want to know more.
