Hello everybody!
I have been living in the UK for only 4 months now and I am starting working as a freelance translator. I would like to know how is the tax system for freelance translators in the UK. Can anybody help? Do we need to be registered somewhere? Do we have to pay a fix amount of money (monthly, annually) as taxes? Do we need a NIN to work as freelancers?

I suggest you ring them to register and ask for advice. I was seen by a business adviser in my own home when I moved back to the UK about 6 years ago (free) and this was extremely helpful. However, you can also register online.

You have to do a tax return once a year (deadline is 31 January) and payments are made twice a year (deadlines 31 January and 31 July). You also have to pay national insurance contributions every month. ▲ Collapse

Hi Melina,
May I ask you where do you live, becuase on the map it looks like we live in the same place.
Melina Carbajales wrote: Do we need to be registered somewhere?
Yes, Nikki gave you already the info. I suggest you do it ASAP, becuase it takes a long time to get you tax number and some companies (at least this is what happened to me) refuse to accept your invoices without it.
Do we need a NIN to work as freelancers?
Yes. This also takes quite long time, so do it asap.
If just by chance you are indeed based around Leeds and want to chat, please contact me over the profile. Let's meet and talk. I think we are in a more or less similar situation.
Best regards, Natalia
