The fly tower is the space above the stage, into which fly bars are winched. It is usually a very tall space, at least as tall as the proscenium arch, to allow scenery to be winched completely out of the sight of the audience.

In theatres with a full fly tower, this space may also be referred to as the flies.

In theatres that do not have a full fly tower, the flies is the name given to the balcony around the roof of the theatre where the lighting bars are tied off.
