That's quite an interesting article, and I think the author is right when it comes to translating texts like lyrics, journalistic articles, literature etc.

Another thing is the translation of informative texts like news, technical descriptions, operating instructions and so on. I think in this field a well educated translator can produce a good translation without problems, provided that he's working in a professional way.

I liked the "belles infideles" term. I completely agree, any writer (not even necessarily a translator) can "beautify" a text when the issues are a misused preposition or clunky syntax.

But poor reading comprehension or lack of sufficient command of the source language is just a recipe for big trouble.

you still can win if:
a/ you are bilingual;
2/if you have lived in the countries where the two languages are spoken for the sufficient time, so that you are familiar with the right expressions, slang, realia, the societies most burning issues, when you feel the languages, when you operate the 'usus' freely.
