Source text - English You have been asked to participate in this research study because you have chronic Hepatitis B infection. “Hepatitis” is a word used to describe inflammation in the liver. In this case the reaction, or inflammation, is caused by the Hepatitis B Virus (HBV). Over time, the inflammation in your liver may cause scarring (cirrhosis) of the liver. After years of infection with Hepatitis B, some people can develop liver cancer.
The sponsor and The Liver Institute are studying an investigational drug, clevudine as a possible treatment of HBV. An investigational drug is one that has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Clevudine is in a class of drugs known as “nucleoside analogues” which help decrease the production of HBV in your body. Clevudine will not “cure” your chronic HBV.
Thirteen other research studies have been performed to date with clevudine in both healthy subjects and hepatitis B subjects.
Adefovir dipivoxil is an approved medication that is used to treat hepatitis B, and is the other medication you may receive in this study. Adefovir dipivoxil works by blocking a further increase in the amount of HBV in your body.
The purpose of this study is to compare the safety and effectiveness of clevudine to adefovir in people who have HBV and who have never been treated with hepatitis B medicines known as nucleoside analogues. This study will involve approximately 480 HBV infected subjects. Should you decide to take part in the study, you will be randomly assigned, by chance (like a flip of a coin), to receive one of two treatment groups. You have an equal chance of being in one of the following groups:
- One group will take one 30 mg clevudine capsule and one placebo capsule together once per day. About 2 out of every 3 subjects in the study (67%) will receive clevudine.
- One group will take one 10 mg adefovir capsule and one placebo capsule together once per day. About 1 out of every 3 subjects in the study (33%) will receive adefovir.
This study is blinded, which means that neither you nor your study doctor will know which medication you are receiving. However, in case of an emergency, this information is available to your study doctor. Placebo capsules will be given to you to take along with the study medication. A placebo is a capsule that does not contain any active drug but is made to look just like the “real” capsules. You will always receive one of the study drugs in addition to the placebo for the first 72 weeks of the study.

Nghiên cứu này thu nhận khoảng480 đối tượng nhiễm HBV. Nếu quý vị quyết định tham gia vào nghiên cứu này, quý vị sẽ được chỉ định ngẫu nhiên, theo cơ hội (giống như tung đồng xu), để vào một trong hai nhóm điều trị. Quý vị có một cơ hội bằng nhau để tham gia vào một trong hai nhóm sau:
- Một nhóm sẽ uống một viên nang 30 mg clevudine và một viên nang giả dược một lần mỗi ngày. Khoảng 2/3 đối tượng trong nghiên cứu này (67%) sẽ nhận clevudine.
- Một nhóm sẽ uống một viên nang 10 mg adefovir và một viên nang giả dược một lần mỗi ngày. Khoảng 1/3 đối tượng trong nghiên cứu này (33%) sẽ nhận adefovir.
Đây là nghiên cứu mù, có nghĩa là quý vị hoặc bác sĩ nghiên cứu của quý vị sẽ không biết quý vị đang dùng thuốc nào. Tuy nhiên, trong trường hợp cấp cứu, thông tin này sẽ có sẵn cho bác sĩ nghiên cứu của quý vị. Các viên giả dược sẽ được cấp cho quý vị để uống cùng với thuốc nghiên cứu.
