When it comes to technical analysis, there is a temptation to ignore the basics. Many traders fall into the trap of looking for strategies that are, well, more complicated. The concept of support and resistance levels is straightforward to understand in theory. In practice, however, it is a little more difficult. The common misconception is that it is just “drawing support and resistance lines” on a chart. There is some truth to that. Proper use of support and resistance doesn’t have to be complicated. The key is finding the right level for your lines and using them wisely.
What is Support and Resistance?
The whole idea of support and resistance in technical analysis is identifying areas where there is support and resistance.
Support
Support price levels identify an area where there has been demand from investors. This can often result in a downward trend pausing for a moment and then taking one of the following paths:
• Continuing the downward trend through the support line. That’s a sell signal.
• Bouncing off the support line and moving into an upward trend. That’s a buy signal.
• A prolonged period of consolidation. This indicates that there is no trend.
Resistance
When it comes to resistance price levels, this is an area where investors have historically looked to take profits or go short instead of taking out new long positions. The potential paths when hitting resistance lines are as follows:
• Continued support pushes the price above the resistance level into new territory. This is a buy signal.
• Profit-taking will see the price fall back, switching into a downtrend. This is a sell signal.
• A prolonged period of consolidation. This indicates that there is no trend.
When a price breaks through a resistance level, this can switch and become a support level. Similarly, with a downward trend support level, if the price crashes through this level, it can prove to be a resistance in the event of a recovery. You would be astounded at the number of times support, and resistance levels emerge on price charts. They often end up flip-flopping from support to resistance and vice versa.

Уровень поддержки
Линии поддержки показывают ценовые уровни, на которых инвесторы проявляют повышенный спрос на финансовый инструмент. Когда нисходящий тренд достигает этой отметки, нередко наблюдается небольшой откат, после чего есть несколько вариантов развития событий:
• продолжение нисходящего тренда и пробитие уровня поддержки (это сигнал на продажу);
• отскок от линии поддержки и формирование восходящего тренда (это сигнал на покупку);
• затяжной период консолидации (выраженного тренда не наблюдается).
Уровень сопротивления
В свою очередь, линии сопротивления – это ценовые уровни, на которых инвесторы обычно фиксируют прибыль по длинным позициям или совершают короткую продажу. Далее ситуация может развиваться по одному из следующих сценариев:
• поддержка протолкнёт цену выше уровня сопротивления (это сигнал на покупку);
• закрытие длинных позиций приведёт к падению цены и формированию нисходящего тренда (это сигнал на продажу);
• затяжной период консолидации (выраженного тренда не наблюдается).
Пробитый уровень сопротивления может стать уровнем поддержки. По аналогии, если цена в нисходящем тренде пробьёт уровень поддержки, в случае последующего восстановления он может оказаться уровнем сопротивления. Наблюдая за графиками, вы будете поражены, насколько часто возникают уровни поддержки и сопротивления, то и дело меняясь ролями.

Keith Brown is a professor at Arizona State University’s School of Politics and Global Studies. He is also director of The Melikian Center for Russian, Eurasian & Eastern European Studies. With a doctorate in anthropology from the University of Chicago, Brown works primarily in the domain of culture, politics, and identity, focused on the Balkans.
In an interview with portal CriThink.mk, Brown explains the importance of critical thinking when learning history.
CriThink: How important is the application of critical thinking to history and anthropology?
Keith Brown (KB): Critical thinking is very important in both history and anthropology. Skeptics and naysayers sometimes dismiss our methods as “soft” or trot out tired clichés like “history is written by the winners.” But evaluating and comparing sources, and weighing how cultural and social factors impact individual decisions, are essential components of both disciplines. In addition, and perhaps most importantly, historians and anthropologists recognize that meanings and horizons shift over time and across space.
This is especially important in the study of nationalism—a mode of political organization and identity formation that contributed to the break-up of multiconfessional empires in the 19th century and which often seeks legitimacy by claiming ancient roots. What makes it more complicated is that most nation-states place a high premium on communicating to their citizens a strong sense of shared history that distinguishes them from others. Often, it is easier for people to see the inconsistencies and distortions in their neighbors’ versions of the past than to question or closely scrutinize the history that they think holds their own society together.
Critical thinking demands, as an early step, recognition of one’s own blinkers, prejudices, and areas of ignorance. It also benefits from dialogue in which participants check their egos and agendas at the door and measure success not by the points they score but by the new ways of seeing they have helped generate for themselves or others.

A rendere il tutto ancor più complicato vi è il fatto che la maggior parte degli stati-nazione dà primaria importanza all’accrescere nei propri cittadini un forte senso di storia comune che li distingue dagli altri. Per le persone è spesso più facile vedere le incoerenze e le distorsioni nelle versioni che hanno del passato i loro vicini, piuttosto che delle proprie. È più difficoltoso, infatti, mettere in discussione o esaminare in maniera critica la propria di storia che si sente come fondante della società di appartenenza.
Il pensiero critico richiede, come primo passo, la consapevolezza della propria cecità, dei pregiudizi e delle aree di ignoranza. In tale ambito è di grande aiuto anche il dialogo tra persone diverse, a patto che i partecipanti lascino il proprio ego e le proprie convinzioni fuori dalla porta e misurino il successo non con i gol segnati, ma in base alle nuove prospettive che hanno scoperto per sé stessi o per gli altri.
