"Faith is a bird that knows the dawn and sings while it is dark," Sevastia said to herself as she sank into the sofa to rest. She did not remember exactly when she had learned this Eastern saying. To her surprise, it had come to mind repeatedly throughout her long trip in the vilayet of Monastir from the town of Monastir to Korcha, after she heard that nightingale singing so beautifully in the dark in a lone chestnut tree. She had actually stopped her horse to listen to it for a while. "The saying must be about the nightingale," she had thought for a moment before kicking her horse's belly gently, making her lope along at an easy pace. The saying was clearly wise. But why was she thinking that it had anything to do with her? She tried hard to figure it out but she could not put her finger on it. She knew she was groping in the dark. She tried to give some tentative answers to the question. What was the thing she desired the most? It was the freedom of her people, the Albanians, from the Turks, after centuries of suffering under the Ottoman domination. "Freedom can be compared with the dawn. Is it impossible for Albanians to win their freedom?" she asked herself. "Nothing is impossible for God. Other Balkan peoples, the Greeks and the Serbs, have won their independence. European Turkey is shrinking. Its four Albanian vilayets, administered by callous bureaucrats, can be free as well."

Nuk i kujtohej me saktësi kur e kishte mësuar këtë fjalë të urtë perëndimore. Për habinë e saj, kishte vazhduar ti vinte në mëndje përgjatë gjithë udhëtimit nëpër vilajetin e Monastirit, nga qyteti i Monastirit ne Korçë, mbasi kishte dëgjuar një bilbil që këndonte aq bukur në errësirë në një pemë arre të vetmuar. Për ta dëgjuar më gjatë kishte ndaluar edhe kalin. "Fjala e urtë mund të jetë për bilbilin," kishte menduar për një moment, para se ti binte lehtësisht kalit për ti dhënë një galop te lehtë. Stylistic Theories: Tolkien and Shakespeare
Mentioning Tolkien in the same breath with Shakespeare will seem to many rash, even perverse. If there is one image which biographical criticism has projected powerfully, it is that of Tolkien the Philistine, hater of literary mainstreams. He read little moder poetry and little moder fiction, taking 'no serious notice' even of what he read. He liked as much as anything the works of John Buchan. In 1931 he succeded in eliminating Shakespeare from his part of the Oxford English syllabus. In childhood he found that he 'disliked cordially' Shakespeare's plays, remembering especially an early 'bitter disappointment and disgust ... with the shabby use made in Shakespeare of the coming of "Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane hill"'. Many critics have felt that these strongly anti-literary or anti-poetic attitudes have found suitable reflection in Tolkien's own style, described variusly as 'Brewer' Biblical', 'Boy's Own', irrisestibly reminiscent of 'the work of Mr Frank Richards' (the creator of of a sequence of school stories about a fat boy, Billy Bunter):

Citare Tolkien a Shakespeare nella stessa frase sembrerà a molti avventato, se non addirittura perversamente contraddittorio. Se vi è un'immagine che la critica biografica ha comunicato con forza, è proprio quella di Tolkien il Filisteo, nemico della letteratura ufficiale: egli leggeva ben poca poesia o narrativa moderna, prendendo «in scarsa considerazione» persino quello che leggeva, e apprezzava le opere di John Buchan quanto e più di altri testi; nel 1931 riuscì addirittura a eliminare Shakespeare dalla sua parte di programma di inglese a Oxford. In gioventù, infatti, Tolkien si rese conto di «detestare cordialmente» le sue opere teatrali, ricordando in special modo un senso di «delusione e disgusto assai intensi [...] per l'uso squallido fatto nell'opera di Shakespeare dell'arrivo della "Grande Foresta di Birnam all'alta collina di Dunsinane"». Secondo molti critici, questo atteggiamento fortemente anti-letterario o anti-poetico ha trovato un adeguato riscontro proprio nel suo stile letterario, descritto più volte come «biblico in stile Brewer», alla "Boy's Own", fin troppo simile all'«opera di Frank Richards» (creatore di una serie di storie scolastiche su un ragazzino grassottello di nome Billy Bunter).
