1 January 1942 || The name "United Nations" is coined
The name "United Nations", coined by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt was first used in the Declaration by United Nations of 1 January 1942, during the Second World War, when representatives of 26 nations pledged their Governments to continue fighting together against the Axis Powers.

In 1945, representatives of 50 countries met in San Francisco at the United Nations Conference on International Organization to draw up the United Nations Charter. Those delegates deliberated on the basis of proposals worked out by the representatives of China, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States at Dumbarton Oaks, United States in August-October 1944. Το όνομα "Ηνωμένα 'Εθνη", το οποίο επινοήθηκε από τον Πρόεδρο των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών Φρανκλίνο Ντ. Ρούσβελτ χρησιμοποιήθηκε για πρώτη φορά στην Διακυρηξη των Ηνωμένων Εθνών της 1ης Ιανουαρίου του 1942. κατά τη διάρκεια του δευτέρου Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου, όταν εκπρόσωποι 26 εθνών δεσμεύτηκαν πως οι Κυβερνήσεις τους θα συνέχιζαν ενωμένες τον αγώνα ενάντια στις δυναμεις του Άξονα.

Το 1945, εκπρόσωποι 50 χωρών συναντήθηκαν στο Σαν Φρανσίσκο στη Συνδιάσκεψη των Ηνωμένων Εθνών γισ τη Διεθνή Οργάνωση προκειμένου να σχεδιάσουν τον Χάρτη των Ηνωμένων Εθνών. Εκείνοι οι αντιπρόσωποι συσκέφθηκαν βάσει των προτάσεων που είχαν ήδη εκπονηθεί από τους εκπροσώπους της Κίνας, της Σοβιετικής Ένωσης, του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου και των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών στο Dumbarton Oaks των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών από τον Αύγουστο-Οκτώβριο του 1944.
