Source text - English During Ramadan, days are quiet as residents fast from dawn to dusk. But at night, the city lights up.

WALKING through a maze of narrow alleyways inside Khan el-Khalili, Cairo’s 14th-century souk, I was struck by the festive atmosphere. Strands of decorative lights twinkled over spice shops and jewelry stores. Rainbows of colorful scarves and beaded necklaces lined walkways, while above me, everywhere I looked, glass and tin lanterns gently dotted the darkness with rays of red, yellow, green and blue.
At El Fishawy, thought to be the market’s oldest coffeehouse, I jostled my way to a rare empty seat before savoring a steaming glass of karkaday, a deep, red hibiscus tea. Around me, young men, women and children offered a revolving display of goods and services to those fortunate enough to be seated. Had I wanted to, I could have had my shoes shined, bought a scarf, chosen a watch, sampled some almonds and bargained for a handbag, all in the time it took me to sip one cup of tea.
But I had to be on my way. With midnight approaching, I headed next to Eros, a cool contemporary club in central Cairo where the only nods to tradition were the long, white robes and ruby fezzes worn by the waiters. The headwaiter greeted me warmly, asking if I was part of the private party taking place in a room at one end of the club. Seeing the sophisticated crowd behind the glass walls, I was tempted to say yes, but worried that my lack of Arabic might give me away once inside.
Instead, I chose a table on the outdoor terrace, where I enjoyed a mezze platter of spicy eggplant purée, hummus and baba ghanouj under trees decorated with fairy lights and fluttering white streamers. Listening to lounge music and watching the young, stylish clientele inhale tobacco flavored with vanilla, piña colada or cherry cola from thigh-high silver shisha water pipes, I noticed that about a third of the women were wearing head scarves, all of which were coordinated so perfectly to their fashionable outfits it made me tempted to wear one.
With a warm September breeze blowing, I thought of fitting in a predawn felucca ride down the Nile, where oversize sails propel the wooden boats so gently downriver, and the cotton pillows and cushions are so completely comfortable, it could easily be the most soothing boat ride in the world.
I still had a long night ahead of me. Sleep would have to wait.
This was not quite what I had expected when I landed in Egypt a few days earlier. I had arrived during the middle of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and the holiest time of year, when Muslims must fast from dawn to dusk. Like most Westerners, I had only a passing knowledge of Ramadan and its traditions, and imagined the residents of Cairo would be in a quiet, reflective mood. I expected a city where life had crawled to a near standstill. Yet driving in from the airport at 1 a.m., I was amazed to see markets packed with shoppers, families in cafes, and an endless flotilla of boats on the river.
Seeing the Ramadan lanterns swaying gently from shop entrances, balconies and trees, in all shapes and sizes, in materials from copper and brass to plastic and tin, was mesmerizing. Far from being subdued, Cairo was positively glowing.
The next morning, I quickly learned the truth about Ramadan — that it is indeed a serious religious observance, with Muslims purifying themselves through self-restraint, good deeds and prayer (they are encouraged to read the entire Koran during the month), but that it is also their faith’s most festive holiday, one in which family and friends stay up late feasting and socializing.
It’s an almost surreal mix of piety during the day and partying at night.
As Abdullah Shleifer, professor emeritus of the American University of Cairo and a former New Yorker who converted to Islam, explained it to me, “It is not against the law of Islam to have fun in the evening after you have fasted all day — and it is a very severe fast with no food, water, tobacco or sex from sunrise to sunset — but it is much more common to see this kind of night life during Ramadan in Westernized Arab countries.” Or as one local Muslim told me, “Ramadan is different here, as Egyptians love to celebrate whatever they can.”
Far from being the worst time of the year to be a tourist in Cairo, it soon proved to be one of the best.

Mentre passeggiavo attraverso un labirinto di vicoli stretti all’interno di Khan el-Khalili, l’antico bazar del 14esimo secolo del Cairo, rimasi assai colpita dall'atmosfera festiva. Fili di luci decorative oscillavano sui negozi di spezie e sulle gioiellerie. Arcobaleni di sciarpe colorate e collane fatte di perline erano esposte in fila lungo il cammino, mentre sopra di me, ovunque guardassi, lanterne di vetro e alluminio illuminavano l'oscurità come delle stelle con raggi di rosso, giallo, verde e blu.
Arrivata a El Fishawy, che si dice sia la più vecchia caffetteria del bazar, mi precipitai immediatamente verso un insolito posto libero per assaporare un bicchiere di karkaday, un tè profondo ricavato dai fiori dell'ibisco rosso. Attorno a me, ragazzi, donne e bambini offrivano dalle loro vetrine ambulanti merci e servizi a coloro tanto fortunati da essere seduti. Se avessi voluto, mi sarei potuta far lucidare le scarpe, avrei potuto comprare una sciarpa, scegliere un orologio, assaggiare qualche mandorla e contrattare per il prezzo di una borsa, tutto nel tempo di sorseggiare una tazza di tè.
Dovevo, però, rimettermi in marcia. Si stava facendo mezzanotte così mi diressi verso l’Eros, un locale notturno moderno e alla moda situato al centro del Cairo dove gli unici cenni alla tradizione erano le lunghe tuniche bianche e i fez color rubino indossati dal personale. Il capocameriere mi accolse calorosamente chiedendomi se fossi invitata alla festa privata che si stava svolgendo in una sala in disparte. Vedendo quella folla sofisticata dietro i muri di vetro, fui tentata di rispondere di si, ma ero consapevole che non parlavo arabo e per questo mi avrebbero cacciata non appena entrata.
Così, optai per un tavolo sulla terrazza sotto un albero decorato con luci fiabesche dal quale svolazzavano festoni bianchi dove gustai un meze composto da una purea di melanzane, ceci e baba ghanouj. Ascoltavo musica lounge e guardavo la giovane ed elegante clientela inalare tabacco aromatizzato alla vaniglia, piña colada e charry cola dalla shisha, una pipa ad acqua con un lungo tubo d’argento, quando notai che circa un terzo delle donne presenti indossava il velo, e questi erano coordinati così perfettamente ai loro abiti alla moda che mi allettava l’idea di indossarne uno anch’io.
Mentre soffiava una leggera brezza settembrina, pensai che prima che sorgesse il sole sarei potuta salire su una felucca che scendeva lungo Nilo, con le vele smisurate che spingevano l’imbarcazione di legno gentilmente a valle, e i cuscini di cotone erano così comodi che poteva essere sicuramente il viaggio in barca più rilassante al mondo.
La notte era ancora giovane. Il sonno avrebbe aspettato.
Questo non era proprio ciò che immaginavo quando atterrai in Egitto qualche giorno prima. Arrivai nel bel mezzo del Ramadan, il nono mese del calendario islamico e il periodo più solenne dell’anno, quando i musulmani devono digiunare dall’alba al tramonto. Come la maggior parte degli occidentali, anche io avevo un’idea vaga del Ramadan e delle sue tradizioni, e immaginavo che gli abitanti del Cairo si trovassero in uno stato contemplativo e composto. Mi aspettavo una città dove la vita fosse quasi immobile. Appena arrivata dall'aeroporto all'una di notte, rimasi sorpresa nel vedere i mercati affollati di clienti, intere famiglie nei caffè, e flotte interminabili di imbarcazioni sul fiume.
Restai ipnotizzata dalle lanterne del Ramadan che oscillavano lentamente sugli ingressi dei negozi, sui balconi e sugli alberi, erano di tutte le forme e misure, fatte con tutti i materiali dal rame all’ottone, dalla plastica all’alluminio. Non era affatto una città sopita, il Cairo era positivamente esuberante.
Il mattino seguente capii rapidamente le verità sul Ramadan: è, in realtà, un'osservanza religiosa seria, i musulmani si purificano attraverso l'autocontrollo, le buone azioni e le preghiere (vengono incoraggiati a leggere l'intero Corano durante questo mese), allo stesso tempo, rappresenta il periodo più festivo per la loro fede, quello in cui le famiglie e gli amici stanno in piedi fino a tardi festeggiano e socializzano.
È una specie di miscela surreale di restrizione durante il giorno e una grande festa durante la notte.
Abdullah Shleifer, emerito professore all’American University of Cairo ex newyorkese convertito all’Islam, mi spiegò che “Non è contro la legge dell’Islam divertirsi la notte dopo che hai digiunato per tutto il giorno, e si tratta di un digiuno ferreo senza cibo, acqua, tabacco o sesso dall’alba fino al tramonto; ma è anche vero che è più facile trovare questo genere di festeggiamenti nei paesi arabi occidentalizzati.” O come mi disse una volta un musulmano del posto, “Il Ramadan è diverso qui, dal momento che gli egiziani amano festeggiare ogni cosa.”
Lontano dall’essere il momento peggiore, questo è assolutamente il periodo migliore dell’anno per visitare il Cairo.
