Things Are Heating Up
Could our weather over the last decade be an aberration? Storm intensities have increased 100% since the 1970s. Ocean levels are rising 50% faster than a decade ago. The Greenland Ice Sheet is melting faster than ever before. Polar bears are drowning in a sea of melting Arctic ice. Or could all of this be due to the most rapid change in climate in 650,000 years? A team of over 2,000 scientists from more than 100 countries has been urging us for some time with an unqualified yes. If we don’t do something about it soon, they tell us it will change the way we live and do business for generations to come.
Formed in 1988, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), has continuously cautioned industry and governments to take note of their findings: since 1970, the earth’s average temperature has increased for each succeeding decade; the 22 warmest years have occurred since 1980; the six warmest years since 1880 have occurred in the last 8 years, with 2005 being the hottest year in history. IPCC tells us that this heating is due to a marked increase in the concentration of Green House Gases in the earth’s atmosphere, carbon dioxide being a major culprit, formed by burning fossil fuels like oil and coal.
The Greenland Ice Sheet covers 1.68 million square kilometers, roughly the size of Mexico and in places rises to 3 kilometers. Recently, scientists found that the flow speed of 12 glaciers, which together account for half of the discharge water from the Greenland Ice Sheet, is increasing—very fast. Polar bears are drowning because they are set afloat on isolated ice flows, and die of exhaustion, swimming in search of the nearest land mass. If the entire Greenland Ice Sheet were to melt, it would raise sea levels by 7 meters. It would facilitate melting of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, and this could increase sea levels by a total of 15 meters. Not good news for London, New York City, Singapore, and hundreds of other coastal cities.
Business Not As Usual
What does this mean for business? If we do nothing, insurance premiums will go through the roof. Swiss Re, the world’s second largest insurance company reports that the costs associated with global warming damages could reach $150 billion per year by 2010. They are raising premiums for companies that are not making an effort to limit their exposure to climate change. Insurers will also be hit by increasing numbers of tragedies such as the European heat wave of 2003, when more than 30,000 people died in the month of August from heat exhaustion. Increasing ocean temperatures will bring more intense storms like Katrina and Rita, which devastated the Gulf States in the U.S. and caused billions of dollars of damages.
Farmers throughout Europe and the rest of the world, who already face economic challenges, will not do well. A one degree Celsius increase in average global temperature decreases many crop yields between 10 and 20%. Yields are already dropping in many countries, including Russia, India and North America.
Demographics will change the way businesses operate. Mass emigrations are anticipated on the European Continent because of weather changes, both hotter and colder. One study conducted by the U.S. Pentagon predicts a reasonable probability that climate change could force the Gulf Stream to dive deep within the Atlantic Ocean. As a result, northern Europe would cool to a Siberian freeze. London, Paris and many cities like them would cease to exist as we know them. And because of globalization economic chaos would be prevalent throughout the world.
A Global Opportunity
We are performing a dangerous experiment, and no one knows the precise outcome. But, we do know that if we do nothing, the future for business and citizens of the world will be most unpleasant.
However, if we act quickly, we can create a better future by using this challenge to stimulate our economies, create jobs, and implement new technologies that can make a positive difference. First, we must invest in existing energy efficiency technologies, especially in transportation, e.g. hybrid petrol-electric vehicles. Secondly, we must move rapidly to existing non-fossil fuels to replace a large fraction of current petrol products. These fuels include bio-ethanol and bio-diesel. The Czech Republic could play a big role in this area. We must also invest heavily in wind and solar power for electricity generation. Modern wind turbines produce electricity at a cost than coal or oil. And thirdly, we must invest for the longer term in R&D to commercialize hydrogen fuel cells to power automobiles, factories, and buildings.
If we act soon, we have the opportunity to create much greater security in our currently challenged world.

Oteplování klimatu
Lze změny počasí v posledních deseti letech považovat za pouhou anomálii? Od sedmdesátých let vzrostla intenzita bouří o 100%. Hladina oceánů stoupá o polovinu rychleji než před deseti lety. Grónský ledovec roztává rychleji než kdykoli předtím. Polární medvědi tonou v moři z roztátého arktického ledu. Nebo to lze vše připsat na vrub nejrychlejším klimatickým změnám za posledních 650 000 let? Již nějakou dobu se nás přes 2000 vědců z více než stovky zemí světa naléhavě pokouší přesvědčit, že odpovědí na tuto otázku je bezvýhradné ano. Varují nás, že jestliže nebudeme schopni v brzké době tyto problémy řešit, budou muset příští generace změnit nejen způsob života, ale i způsob podnikání.
Od svého vzniku v roce 1988 usiluje Mezivládní panel o změnách klimatu (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, IPCC) o to, aby průmysl a vlády jednotlivých zemí vzaly v úvahu jeho závěry. Od roku 1970 se v každé následující dekádě zvyšuje průměrná teplota na Zemi, od roku 1980 bylo zaznamenáno 22 nejteplejších let v historii, přičemž 6 z nich bylo naměřeno během posledních 8 let. Rok 2005 byl dokonce nejteplejším rokem vůbec. Podle IPCC oteplování způsobují značně zvýšené koncentrace skleníkových plynů v atmosféře. Za hlavního viníka bývá označován oxid uhličitý, který vzniká spalováním fosilních paliv, jakými jsou například ropa a uhlí.
Grónský ledovec se rozkládá na ploše 1,68 milionu kilometrů čtverečních (což přibližně odpovídá velikosti Mexika) a v některých místech dosahuje výšky 3 kilometrů. Vědci nedávno zjistili, že rychlost odtávání 12 ledovců, které dohromady tvoří polovinu vody odtékající z celého Grónského ledovce, se prudce zvyšuje. Polární medvědi, kteří se octnou izolováni na plujících krách, se nakonec utopí vyčerpáním v marné snaze najít nejbližší pevninu. Pokud by Grónský ledovec roztál úplně, hladina světového oceánu by stoupla o 7 metrů. To by navíc usnadnilo roztávání západního Antarktického ledovce, čímž by se hladina moří mohla zvednout až o celkových 15 metrů. Takové zprávy by jistě nepotěšily Londýn, New York, Singapur a stovky dalších měst na pobřeží.
Podnikání nebude takové jako dřív
Jaký má tohle vše dopad na podnikání? Pokud nic neuděláme, pojistné bude stoupat do závratných výšek. Swiss Re, druhá největší zajišťovna na světě oznámila, že škody způsobené následky globálního oteplování mohou do roku 2010 dosáhnout 150 miliard dolarů ročně. Firmám, které se nijak nesnaží snížit své dopady na změny klimatu, tak pojistné postupně roste. Pojišťovny budou také čelit rostoucímu množství tragických událostí, jakými byla například vlna veder v Evropě v roce 2003, kdy během srpna zemřelo 30 000 lidí na následky vyčerpání z horka. S rostoucí teplotou oceánu bude stoupat i intenzita hurikánů, jakými byly Katrina nebo Rita, které se přehnaly přes státy v oblasti Mexického zálivu a zanechaly po sobě mnohamiliardové škody.
Farmáři, ať už Evropě nebo kdekoli na světě, kteří již nyní čelí ekonomickému tlaku, budou zasaženi ještě víc. Zvýší-li se průměrná teplota na Zemi o 1 °C, poklesnou úrody o 10 až 20%. K poklesu úrody již dochází v řadě zemí včetně Ruska, Indie a Severní Ameriky.
Na podnikání také dopadnou demografické změny. V důsledku klimatických změn (ať už oteplování či ochlazování) se dají v Evropě očekávat masivní migrace obyvatelstva. Podle jedné studie, kterou vypracoval americký Pentagon, existuje poměrně vysoká míra pravděpodobnosti, že se Golfský proud vlivem klimatických změn ponoří hlouběji do Atlantského oceánu, kvůli čemuž by teploty v severní Evropě mohly klesnout až na úroveň Sibiře. Londýn, Paříž a další města by tak přestala existovat v té podobě, v jaké je známe dnes. A v důsledku globalizace by světovou ekonomiku zachvátila panika a chaos.
Globální příležitost
Experiment, který nyní provádíme, je velmi nebezpečný a nikdo není schopen přesně určit jeho následky. Ovšem už dnes víme, že pokud nic neuděláme, v žádném případě nečeká podnikání ani obyvatele planety příjemná budoucnost.
Pokud zareagujeme dostatečně rychle a využijeme tuto výzvu k podpoře ekonomiky, vytvoření nových pracovních míst a zavedení nových technologií, příznivých pro danou situaci, můžeme tuto neblahou budoucnost zvrátit.Nejprve je však zapotřebí investovat do technologií zvyšujících energetickou účinnost, zejména pak v dopravě. Mám na mysli například vozidla na hybridní benzínový a elektrický pohon. Zadruhé se musíme rychle zaměřit na nefosilní paliva, kterými nahradíme velkou část nynějších ropných produktů. Mezi těmito palivy najdeme například bioetanol či bionaftu. V této oblasti by Česká republika mohla hrát významnou úlohu. Musíme také masivně investovat do výroby elektřiny pomocí větru a slunce. Moderní větrné turbíny dokáží vyrábět elektřinu za cenu energie z uhlí nebo z ropy. A zatřetí je potřeba dlouhodobých investic do oblasti výzkumu a vývoje vodíkových palivových článků, které budou pohánět automobily a zásobovat elektřinou továrny či budovy.
Pokud zareagujeme včas, máme příležitost náš nynější ohrožený svět učinit bezpečnějším.

Ausgangstext - Tschechisch Zdroj dat a metodologie
Pro realizaci výzkumu byl použit on-line panel firemních respondentů (www.b2bvyzkumy.cz), který firma Digimark dlouhodobě buduje. V době realizace výzkumu obsahoval panel přes 8300 českých firem, z nichž bylo 5000 náhodným výběrem vyzváno k účasti na výzkumu pomocí personalizovaného e-mailového oslovení. V časovém limitu 12 dní, ve kterém probíhal sběr dat (od 18.5. do 29.5.2005), se výzkumu zúčastnilo 2687 firem. Výsledný soubor dat po kontrole validity dat a odstranění nevyplněných dotazníků čítal 2479 respondentů z řad firem.
V on-line panelu jsou uloženy údaje jak o samotných respondentech (osobní a kontaktní údaje), tak o firmách, které zastupují. Firmy jsou identifikovány svým IČO, pro verifikaci a případné doplnění respondenty uváděných údajů bylo proto možné použít informace z dalších zdrojů, zejména Registru ekonomických subjektů.
Přístup k dotazníku byl chráněn heslem, kterým je verifikována identita respondenta. Dotazník byl realizován jako webová aplikace, nabízející respondentům možnost odpovědi na uzavřené i otevřené otázky, odpovědi byly ukládány do databáze na serveru. Pokud respondent přímo neoznačil některou odpověď, pak místo kódu odpovědi byl do dotazníku uložen kód pro hodnotu Neuvedeno.
Dotazník se skládal ze tří oddílů – části zabývající se IP telefonií, dále oddílu o využití datových služeb ve firmách a také části zabývající se pobočkovými telefonními ústřednami ve firmách. Tato studie analyzuje pouze výsledky z té části výzkumu, která byla věnována IP telefonii.
Respondenti získávají za svou účast na výzkumech kredity, pomocí kterých se mohou zúčastnit soutěže o peněžní či věcné výhry, případně mohou získat přímou peněžní odměnu. Respondenti v průběhu výzkumu jednak doplňovali a aktualizovali údaje, které o svých firmách uváděli při registraci a jednak odpovídali na otázky výzkumu. Tato studie se zabývá vyhodnocením odpovědí respondentů na 15 otázek týkajících se IP telefonie.
Validita dat
Při zpracování dat z výzkumu jsme věnovali velkou pozornost zajištění validity dat. Stanovili jsme řadu kritérií, podle nichž byla určována míra validity jednotlivých vyplněných dotazníků. Dotazníky, které nesplňovaly tato kontrolní kritéria, jsme z naší databáze vyřadili. Validitu dat jsme ověřovali na kompletních datech ze všech částí výzkumu, pokud to bylo možné, proto jsou v následujícím výčtu kritérií uvedena i kritéria, která nepocházejí z části dotazníku zabývající se IP telefonií.
Použili jsme následující kritéria validity dotazníků:
a) Kontrola vnitřní konzistence odpovědí – v dotazníku byly některé otázky, které spolu souvisely a při náhodném nebo nepravdivém vyplnění dotazníku by odpovědi na tyto otázky musely být s vysokou pravděpodobností nekonzistentní. Případ, že by se některý respondent vědomě snažil lhát a zajistit konzistenci nepravdivých odpovědí, je nepravděpodobný.
b) Kontrola odpovědí s již známými skutečnostmi
Konkrétně se v případě a) jedná o tato kritéria validity:
• extrémní a nesmyslné hodnoty
• slovní údaj o činnosti firmy – kontrola smysluplnosti a souhlasu s kódem činnosti firmy
• chybějící kontaktní e-mail na respondenta
• kontrola IP adres, ze kterých byly dotazníky vyplňovány
• údaj o čase, který respondent strávil vyplněním dotazníku - pokud respondent strávil v jednotlivé straně dotazníku méně než 20 sekund, byl ihned vyřazen z databáze
• nekonzistence ve znalosti IP telefonie a zároveň znalosti služeb IP telefonie
• nekonzistence v absenci telefonní ústředny a zároveň připojení ústředny přes IP telefonii
• nekonzistence v údaji „IP volání“ přes vlastní datovou síť a neexistenci této sítě
Porušení více kritérií vedlo k vyřazení odpovědi z databáze. Podle počtu porušených kritérií byla určena míra podezření na chybně vyplněný dotazník a podezřelé dotazníky byly dále kontrolovány podle známých skutečností (bod b). To jsou zejména tyto:
• Název a adresa firmy - neanonymita odpovědí zajišťuje možnost kontroly, že respondent uvedl správné jméno a adresu firmy – odpovědi byly označeny kódem, který byl jednotlivým respondentům přidělen při jejich oslovení. Víme tedy, jaká firma se má pod příslušnou odpovědí skrývat.
• Počet zaměstnanců a činnost firmy – tyto údaje jsme pro podezřelé odpovědi získali z volně dostupných databází, jako jsou Obchodní rejstřík a Registr ekonomických subjektů.
• Adresa webových stránek, e-mail a v některých případech i poskytovatel připojení – tyto údaje jsme o firmách získali před začátkem sběru dat z internetu.
Pokud odpovědi vykazovaly zvýšenou míru nekonzistence, byly z databáze vyřazeny.
Vzhledem k uvedené metodice se domníváme, že validita našich dat je dostatečná. Usuzujeme na to z těchto faktů:
a) Do databáze jsme zařadili pouze odpovědi, které jsou dle kritérií validity konzistentní. Samotná kritéria jsou poměrně široká a zajišťují dobrou validitu dat.
b) Z uvedených kontrol validity plyne, že respondenti věnovali vyplnění dotazníků, které byly uznány jako validní, vysokou míru pozornosti. Tuto míru pozornosti je možné určit podle toho, jak detailně je dotazník vyplněn a jaký čas respondent při jeho vyplňování strávil. Pokud respondent věnoval velkou pozornost vyplnění dotazníku a poskytnutí poměrně velkého počtu údajů, je pravděpodobné, že se snažil poskytnout pravdivé údaje.
Respondenti měli pozitivní motivaci odpovídat pravdivě, neboť část svých firemních údajů poskytli s cílem prezentace v elektronickém katalogu firem a navíc uvádění pravdivých údajů je podmínkou pro získání výhod souvisejících s účastí v panelu (výhry, odměny). Navíc respondenti byli upozorněni, že svými odpověďmi mohou ovlivnit rozhodování poskytovatelů telekomunikačních a internetových služeb tím, že jim prostřednictvím výzkumu sdělí své názory, a také na to, že jejich odpovědi mohou sloužit poskytovatelům služeb ke konkrétní nabídce jednotlivým firmám. Vyplnění dotazníku navíc zabere určitý čas a námahu. Respondent, který by poskytoval údaje bez motivace pravdivě odpovědět, by byl identifikován na základě výrazně podprůměrného času, který mu vyplnění dotazníku zabralo. Tato kontrola je umožněna měřením času, který respondenti strávili vyplňováním jednotlivých částí dotazníku.
Domníváme se proto, že aplikací zmíněných kontrol validity a s přihlédnutím k pozitivní motivaci respondentů uvést pravdivé údaje lze konstatovat, že validita získaných dat je dostatečná.
Übersetzung - Englisch Data source and methodology
In order to realise the research, an online panel consisting of business respondent was used (www.b2bvyzkumy.cz). The panel is Digimark's long-term project. When carrying out the research, it contained over 8,300 Czech companies, 5,000 of which we randomly selected and invited to participate in the survey with the help of a personalised email. Within a 12-day time limit, in which data collection was held (from 18 May to 29 May 2005), there were 2,687 companies taking part in the survey. After checking data validity and removing blank questionnaire, the resulting data file consisted of 2,479 business respondents.
The online panel comprises the information concerning the respondents themselves (personal and contact data), as well as the companies which they represent. The companies are identified by the company registration number. Consequently, it was possible to verify of complement the information submitted by the respondents using other sources, mainly the Register of Economic Subjects.
The access to the questionnaire was protected by a password, with the help of which the respondent's identity was verified. The questionnaire was presented in the form of a web application, allowing the respondents to reply to closed and open questions. Their replies were stored into a server database. If the respondent did not mark a response directly, then a code with N/A value was stored in the database instead of a corresponding response code.
The questionnaire consisted of three sections: a section dealing with IP telephony, then a section concerning the use of data services in companies, and a section dealing with private branch exchanges. The submitted study analyses only the research results dealing with IP telephony.
When participating in surveys, the respondents obtain a certain number of credits, entitling them to take part in competitions with financial and other prizes, or possibly, they may obtain a direct financial reward. In the course of the survey, the respondents complemented and updated the information about their companies they mentioned when registering, and responded to the survey questions. The submitted study deals with assessing the respondents' replies to 15 questions dealing with IP telephony.
Data validity
When processing the collected data, we paid great attention to securing data validity. A number of different criteria were established, according to which the validity level of individual questionnaires was determined. The questionnaires not meeting these check criteria were excluded from our database. If possible, the data validity was verified using the complete data coming from all survey sections. That is why the following list of criteria contains also those not originating from the section dealing with IP telephony.
The following questionnaire validity criteria were used:
a) Replies' internal consistence examination: the questionnaire comprised several inter-connected questions, the replies to which would have probably been inconsistent when filling in the questionnaire randomly or untruthfully. Cases when a respondent would have tried to lie deliberately and create a consistence of untrue answers are not likely.
b) Checking the replies with existing knowledge.
Specifically, in case of section a), the following validity criteria were taken into account:
• extreme and nonsense values;
• verbal information concerning the company's activity: checking the meaningfulness and correspondence with the code of the company's activity;
• respondent's missing contact email;
• checking the IP addresses from which the questionnaire were filled in;
• information about the time the respondent spent completing the questionnaire: the respondent is immediately excluded from the database provided that he spent less than 20 seconds on one questionnaire page;
• inconsistence in IP telephony awareness and IP telephony services awareness
• inconsistence in the absence of a telephone exchange and the exchange connection via IP telephony
• inconsistence in the datum of “IP calling” via own data network and non-existence of such network
Violating several criteria meant the exclusion from the database. According to the number of violated criteria, a suspicion level concerning a wrongly completed questionnaire was determined, and all the dubious questionnaires underwent further checking in accordance with the existing knowledge (see point b). In particular, it is the following:
• Company name and address: non-anonymous answers provide a possibility to check that the respondent stated the correct company name and address. The replies were marked with a code assigned to the individual respondents when addressing them. As a result, we know which company should be behind the corresponding answer.
• Number of employees and company's activity: when assessing dubious replies, we obtained this information from publicly accessible databases, such as the Trade Register or the Register of Economic Subjects.
• Website address, email and (in some cases) even Internet service provider: this information was obtained prior to commencing the data collection on the Internet.
The replies were excluded from the database provided that they showed a higher level of inconsistence.
With respect to the above mentioned methodology, we reckon that the data validity is on a sufficient level. Such conclusion was made based on the following facts:
a) The database included only those replies which are consistent according to the validity criteria. The criteria themselves are quite broad, thus assuring a good level of data validity.
b) Based on the above mentioned validity examination, we may conclude that the respondents paid a high level of attention to the questionnaires admitted as valid. The level of attention may be determined according to the details with which the questionnaire was filled in and the time which the respondents spent completing it. Provided that the respondent paid a high level of attention to completing the questionnaire and providing quite a high amount of data, it is probable that he attempted to submit true and fair data.
The respondents were positively motivated to provide true answers, for they supplied a part of their company data aimed at being published in the electronic enterprise catalogue. Furthermore, providing true data is a condition to obtain the benefits related to participating in the panel (prizes and rewards). Besides, the respondents were notified that their replies might influence the decision-making processes of telecommunications and Internet services providers: via the survey, they were expressing their views on the services. The respondents were also notified that their answer might serve for the service providers as a tool to set up specific proposals to individual companies. Furthermore, filling in the questionnaire takes up a certain time and effort. The respondent providing the data without being motivated to submit true answers would have been identified on the basis of a significantly below-average time spent completing the questionnaire. Such verification is enabled by measuring the time which the respondents spent filling in the individual questionnaire sections.
Consequently, we reckon that, due to the application of the above mentioned validity examination, and taking into account the positive motivation of the respondents to provide true data, it may be stated that the validity of the acquired data is sufficient.

Vztah úzkosti, resp. úzkostnosti a učebního stylu se zkoumá jen zřídka, avšak můžeme najít početné studie zabývající se vlivem úzkosti na průběh a především výsledky učení. Fakt, že úzkost výrazně ovlivňuje proces učení, je dobře znám jak psychologům, tak zejména pedagogům, zejména z jejich každodenní praxe. To, jestli má úzkost vliv i na styly učení, je prozatím v počátečním stádiu bádání, provádí se první výzkumy. A.J. Onwuegbuzie a jeho spolupracovníci (Onwuegbuzie, 1997, 1998a, 1998b; Onwuegbuzie, Jiao, 1998; Bailey, Daley, Onwuegbuzie, 1999) v několika studiích zkoumali vztah mezi styly učení a různými typy situačně specifické úzkosti v kontextu akademických situací (academic-related anxiety). Vztahem mezi styly učení a úzkostností, resp. různými typy úzkosti se zabývaly i další výzkumy (např. Sloan, Daane, Giesen, 2002; Hadfield, Martin, Wooden, 1992 aj.). Jejich výsledky se však často neshodují v podstatné míře proto, že různí autoři vychází z různých teoretických modelů stylů učení a používají rozdílné nástroje na jejich měření. Nicméně, tyto výzkumy dokazují, že existuje určitý vztah mezi styly učení a úzkostí.
Realizací našeho výzkumu navazujeme na zahraniční výzkumy, jehož cílem bylo nejen přispět k hlubšímu poznání učebních stylů žáků ve věku 12 – 14 let (pubescentů), zjištění míry jejich úzkostnosti jako trvalé osobnostní vlastnosti, ale rovněž prozkoumání vztahu mezi styly učení a úzkostností. Dílčími cíli bylo potvrzení rozdílů ve stylech učení mezi chlapci a dívkami a odhalení rozdílů ve stylech učení mezi žáky navštěvujícími základní školu a gymnázium. V rámci problematiky úzkosti jsme se dále zaměřili na rozdíly v míře úzkostnosti mezi pohlavím a rozdíly mezi žáky navštěvujícími výše uvedené typy škol.
VÝZKUMNÝ SOUBOR
Výzkum byl proveden v sedmých třídách na dvou základních školách a ve třídách osmého postupného ročníku (tercie) na osmiletém gymnáziu. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo celkem 130 žáků ve věku 12 až 14 let; průměrný věk žáků je 12,98 let. Dívky tvoří 50,77% (N=66) zkoumaného souboru, chlapci 49,23% (N=64).
METODY VÝZKUMU
Úzkostnost byla měřena pomocí Spielbergerovy škály STAIC (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children), konkrétně její slovenské verze ŠAD (Škála na měření úzkosti a úzkostlivosti u dětí), kterou upravili a standardizovali J. Müllner, I. Ruisel a G. Farkaš (1983). Tato metoda je založená na modelu úzkosti „stav-vlastnost“, který předpokládá, že existuje měřitelný rozdíl mezi dočasným, přechodným stavem a relativně stálou predispozicí. Metoda ŠAD má dvě 20ti položkové škály, z nichž první je zaměřena na aktuální stav (úzkost), druhá na trvalou osobnostní vlastnost (úzkostlivost, resp. úzkostnost). Použita byla jen škála na měření úzkostlivosti.
K diagnostice stylu učení byla použita česká verze amerického Dotazníku stylů učení (LSI – Learning Style Inventory) autorů R. Dunnové, K. Dunna a G.E. Price (v překladu a úpravě J. Mareše, 1992). 104 položek původního dotazníku bylo autory české verze zredukováno na 71 položek. Americká verze měří 22 proměnných stylů učení. Česká verze obsahuje 21 proměnných (viz tabulka č. 1).

The relation between anxiety, or anxiousness, and learning styles have not been frequently examined, nevertheless, we may find numerous studies dealing with the impact of anxiety on the course and, above all, results of learning. The fact that anxiety influences significantly the learning process is well known both to psychologists and teachers who have come across the problem in their daily practice. The extent to which the anxiety influences learning styles has not been examined in detail yet; so far, first pieces of research have been carried out. Within several studies, A.J. Onwuegbuzie and his co-operators (Onwuegbuzie, 1997, 1998a, 1998b; Onwuegbuzie, Jiao, 1998; Bailey, Daley, Onwuegbuzie, 1999) examined the relation between learning styles and various types of situation-specific anxiety in the context of academic situations (academic-related anxiety). There have been other pieces of research (e.g. Sloan, Daane, Giesen, 2002; Hadfield, Martin, Wooden, 1992 etc.) dealing with the relation between learning styles and anxiousness, or various types of anxiety. However, their results do not often match to a significant extent, since different authors proceed from different theoretical models of learning styles, thus using different measuring instruments. Nevertheless, these pieces of research prove the existence of a certain relation between learning styles and anxiety.
Carrying out our research, we have followed foreign pieces of research, the aim of which has been not only to contribute to deeper knowledge of 12-14-year-old pupils' learning styles (pubescents), to find out the level of their anxiety as permanent personality trait, but also to examine the relation between learning styles and anxiety. As partial aims, we have intended to verify the differences in the learning styles between boys and girls, as well as to discover differences in learning styles among primary and grammar school students. Within the framework of anxiety problems, we have also focused on the differences in the anxiety levels between both sexes and differences among pupils attending the above mentioned schools.
RESEARCH SAMPLE
The research was carried out in the seventh grades of two primary schools and in the third successive grades of eight-year grammar schools (third grade). The research sample consisted of 130 pupils aged between 12 and 14 years; the average age being 12.98 years. Girls represent 50.77% (N=66) of the research sample, laving 49.23% (N=64) for boys.
RESEARCH METHODS
Anxiety was measured with the help of Spiebelger's STAIC scale (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children), using specifically its Slovak version “SAD” (Children's Anxiety Scale), which was modified and standardised by J. Müllner, I. Ruisel and G. Farkaš (1983). This method is based on the “state-trait” anxiety model which anticipates the existence of a measurable difference between a temporary, transitory state and a relatively stable predisposition. The SAD method comprises two 20-item scales, the first of which is focused on the current state (anxiety or apprehension), whereas the second deals with permanent personality trait (anxiety, anxiousness or sheepishness). It was the second scale that was used in the submitted piece of research.
As far as learning style diagnostics is concerned, a Czech version of the American learning style questionnaire (LSI – Learning Style Inventory) was used, the authors of which are R. Dunn, K. Dunn and G.E. Price (translated any modified by J. Mareš, 1992). The Czech version's authors reduced 104 items included in the original questionnaire into 71 items. The American version measures 22 variables of learning styles. The Czech version contains 21 variables (see Table 1).

It’s not just the ethical thing to do, it makes good business sense.
I had always believed that employee safety was a critical and essential corporate value, but I eventually learned the validity of this premise in a most unfortunate outcome.
It was the fall of 1990, when I was approached by a group of investors from Brazil to set up a joint venture in Rio de Janeiro to manufacture oleomargarine. At the time this product was thought to be a healthier substitute for butter. The Brazilians recognized that Catalytica, Inc., a California company at which I was founder and CEO, was the leading technology company in catalytic processing. And the production of oleomargarine is a catalytic process.
The process appears at first to be unusually simple, but in reality it is more complex and has a specific safety hazard associated with it. In brief, a vegetable oil such as that from soy is mixed with a specially-prepared, nickel catalyst. At high pressures and temperatures, hydrogen gas is carefully bubbled through the mixture and the nickel catalyst breaks down the molecular hydrogen gas into atomic hydrogen that rapidly reacts with the liquid oil, yielding a solid at room temperature. Subsequent addition of yellow vegetable coloring and artificial butter flavor creates a spread that today is a close substitute for butter.
The Brazilians had tried to copy this process from the patent literature, but with no success. Not being catalyst experts, they were completely unaware of the special procedures for preparing the catalyst, activating it, and then separating it after the hydrogenation process was complete. We were in a good negotiating position. We eventually settled on a 50-50 joint venture in which they put up all of the investment and operating capital for 2 years and we contributed technology and know-how.
With several trips a year to Rio de Janeiro—a very pleasant side benefit—we were able to manage the construction and startup of the plant. Within 18 months, the plant was breakeven, and in another six months we were profitable and increasingly so with each passing month. Brazil was at the time an emerging market for oleomargarine, and we had hit the marketplace with perfect timing. Both partners began to make significant returns and we were both quite happy with the joint venture.
Then, at one of our management meetings in Rio, one of our partners presented data that suggested the market was significantly larger than Brazil. It included several other neighboring South American companies. But timing to get the product into the marketplace was crucial. He suggested that we not expand our plant capacity, as we thought best to do, but that we simply push the workers to manufacture more product in the plant at a more rapid pace. I was deeply concerned for safety. The process involves the use of high-pressure hydrogen gas at high temperatures, and without careful operations, this was a recipe for a tremendous bomb. Furthermore, when we established the company, our partners agreed that safety was first among our corporate values and it would never be violated. When I brought this to their attention, they agreed, but felt we could not sacrifice being first in the marketplace, as we would lose market share to the competitors who now recognized the same opportunities we were pursuing. Besides, they insisted, we will give our employees bonuses if they deliver on time.
I was shocked at this reaction. After consultation with our board of directors, I immediately negotiated the sale of our 50 percent ownership in the company, admittedly not for the returns we would have received, had we remained partners and the plant delivered the production schedule that our Brazilian partners were projecting. This was a difficult decision, but I feared for the safety of the workers in the plant. I even wrote a letter to them upon closing the dissolution of this venture, asking them to reconsider the safety hazards involved in operating at too rapid production. A few heeded my letter and left the company, but most stayed, tempted by the high bonuses offered by the Brazilians.
Six months after the breakup of this partnership, I receive a fax from one of our sales agents in South America, that the plant had exploded and several of the workers were killed. What a terrible ending to what started as a wonderful, profitable partnership. The Brazilians were forced into bankruptcy; no one came out a winner. In my opinion, never, never, never sacrifice the safety of employees. It’s not only good ethics; it makes good economic and business sense.

Dodržování bezpečnosti práce není pouze otázkou etiky, nýbrž dává podnikání smysl.
Vždy jsem věřil, že bezpečnost zaměstnanců představuje nezbytnou a nezastupitelnou hodnotou každého zaměstnavatele. Nakonec jsem se však o platnosti tohoto tvrzení přesvědčil za velmi nešťastných okolností.
Na podzim roku 1990 mě kontaktovala skupina brazilských investorů s návrhem založit společný podnik v Rio de Janeiru na výrobu margarínu. V té době se totiž mělo za to, že právě margarín může být zdravější náhradou másla. Brazilští investoři oceňovali, že kalifornská společnost Catalytica, Inc., kterou jsem založil a jejímž jsem byl generálním ředitelem, je přední technologickou společností zabývající se katalytickými procesy. Výroba margarínu je příkladem takového procesu.
Na první podhled může výrobní proces vypadat neobvykle jednoduše, ale ve skutečnosti je složitější, než se zdá a nese s sebou specifická bezpečnostní rizika. Stručně řečeno, rostlinný olej (například sójový) se smíchá se speciálně připraveným niklovým katalyzátorem. Poté se do směsi při vysokém tlaku a teplotě opatrně vhání vodík, přičemž niklový katalyzátor rozkládá molekuly vodíku na jednotlivé atomy, které okamžitě reagují s tekutým olejem. Ten pak tuhne při pokojové teplotě. Potom již stačí přidat žluté rostlinné barvivo a umělé máslové aroma a výrobek, který se podobá máslu, je hotov.
Brazilští investoři se snažili bezúspěšně okopírovat výrobní postup s využitím patentem chráněné literatury. Jelikož nebyli odborníky na katalytické reakce, nebyli si vůbec vědomi speciálních postupů přípravy katalyzátoru, jeho aktivace a následného oddělení poté, co je hydrogenační proces u konce. Naše vyjednávací pozice byla tedy dobrá. Nakonec jsme se dohodli na založení společného podniku, přičemž každá strana vlastnila jednu polovinu. Brazilci se zavázali vložit do firmy veškeré investice a zajistit provozní kapitál na dva roky, my jsme přispěli technologiemi a know-how.
Stačilo několik cest do Ria de Janeira v průběhu jednoho roku (což bylo mimochodem velmi příjemné samo o sobě) a společně se nám podařilo zvládnout výstavbu i zahájení provozu nové továrny. Během osmnácti měsíců přestal být podnik ztrátový, za půl roku vykázal zisk, který narůstal s každým dalším měsícem. V té době se totiž v Brazílii trh s margarínem teprve vytvářel a my jsme se na něj dostali ve správný čas. Výnosy obou partnerů rostly významným tempem a se společným podnikem jsme byli celkem spokojeni.
Poté nám na setkání managementu v Riu jeden z partnerů předložil informace, které naznačovaly, že trh je mnohem větší a že se neomezuje pouze na Brazílii, nýbrž zahrnuje i několik odběratelů v sousedních jihoamerických zemích. Nezbytným předpokladem však bylo, dostat výrobek na trh včas. Navrhl tedy, abychom nerozšiřovali výrobní kapacity závodu, jak jsme původně zamýšleli, ale abychom zkrátka přiměli zaměstnance vyrábět více a rychleji. V tu chvíli jsem se začal hluboce obávat o bezpečnost práce. Během výrobního procesu se totiž používá plynný vodík s vysokou teplotou a tlakem a pokud se nedodrží velmi opatrný postup, hrozí nesmírně silná exploze. Mimo to při založení firmy souhlasili naši partneři s tím, že bezpečnost práce bude jednou z nejdůležitějších hodnot společnosti a že nikdy nedojde k jejímu porušení. Jakmile jsem vyjádřil své obavy, naši partneři se mnou sice souhlasili, nicméně argumentovali tím, že nemůžeme obětovat výhodu obsadit nový trh jako první. Obávali se totiž, že bychom museli přenechat část tržního podílu konkurentům. Ti si již byli dobře vědomi stejných příležitostí, které jsme zkoumali i my. Navíc tvrdili, že zaměstnancům budeme vyplácet odměny, pokud budou schopni zajistit včasnou výrobu.
Taková reakce mě šokovala. Po konzultaci s představenstvem společnosti jsem okamžitě dojednal prodej našeho padesátiprocentního podílu, a vzdal se tak výnosů, které bychom byli nepochybně obdrželi, pokud bychom setrvali v obchodním partnerství. Továrna vyráběla tak, jak zamýšleli naši brazilští kolegové. Nebylo to snadné rozhodnutí, avšak příliš jsem se obával o bezpečnost zaměstnanců továrny. Dokonce jsem jim u příležitosti zrušení společného podniku zaslal dopis, ve kterém jsem je žádal, aby znovu zvážili bezpečnostní rizika spojená s příliš velkou rychlostí výroby. Několik zaměstnanců věnovalo mému dopisu pozornost a společnost opustili, ale většinu z nich lákala vidina vysokých odměn, a tak zůstali.
Šest měsíců po ukončení spolupráce jsem od jednoho z našich prodejců v Jižní Americe obdržel fax. V továrně došlo k explozi a několik zaměstnanců zahynulo. To, co bylo na počátku slibnou a výnosnou obchodní spoluprací, dopadlo tak tragicky. Bývalí brazilští partneři byli nuceni vyhlásit bankrot, ale v této situaci se nikdo nemůže prohlásit vítězem. Proto se domnívám, že není za žádnou cenu možné obětovat bezpečnost zaměstnanců. Bezpečnost není totiž pouze otázka etiky, nýbrž dává skutečný ekonomický smysl podnikání.
