Philosophy

: I think "taking a look at" falls short. When thinkers "se ocupan de algo," they engage/ take an interest in, or address whatever it is they are working on :)

have been engaged in /were engaged in
"engaged in" really does sound like the right term in this context.
meaning: were occupied with; have been occupied with...
type in google "have engaged in" and you will find examples.
Suerte!

have used
Depends how you're translating the rest of the sentence.
The sentence could also be turned round and made passive - "...has been used by..."
I think it might be expressed more simply in English

: I agree with your idea of rephrasing, but "using" is not the meaning of "ocuparse." Cheers, Rachel :)

Hi María E., I know it isn't but I felt it might be what it amounted to, depending on how the rest of the sentence is phrased and so on... :)

have addressed
"That is why ... have addressed ..."
Another option, depending on how much emphasis these philosophers have given to the subject (impossible to determine without futher context).
(I've used the present perfect (have addressed), even though Borjes is no longer alive (normally "addressed" or "had addressed" for things happening in the previous century), as it seems the others are still alive and contributing articles, etc.)

Rachel Fell's suggestion to turn the sentence around is excellent (although I wouldn't translate "hayan ocupado de" as "used").
"... such as Jose Luis Borges, ... and Slavoj Zizek, among others, have addressed its power of thought."
