In reply to the question: "Dove batte il cuore del film?", the director answers:

"L'affresco sulla Grande Storia, e' la cornice di una storia d'amore, tenera, profonda, toccante, impossibile, tra la Marchesa e il grande pittore"

perhaps: "The tapestry of the great story..." - but am not convinced!

Explanation:
perhaps more dramatic and conveying the idea of history with a capital 'H'. Would also allow you to use "backdrop" later, which would be more natural than a literal translation of "cornice".

"Affresco" is much more evocative than "backdrop" though. "La Grande Storia" is simply "history", I would say.
