German term

Wanderlicht

German to English Tech/Engineering Photography/Imaging (& Graphic Arts) lighting equipment
From an article in a trade journal for professional photographers describing how a panoramic picture was taken:

Die Belichtung erfolgte mit einem ••Wanderlicht••, das den Lauf des Sonnenlichts im Tagesverlauf simuliert, und so der Aufnahme eine gewisse Magie verleiht.

Does anyone know the technical term in English for this piece of equipment?

Discussion

Ann C Sherwin (asker) May 8, 2008:
I now realize that is is not a standard piece of equipment. It had to be devised. The setting was a huge indoor hall (22,000 square meters). The subject was stationary, and the idea was to take an exposure that took 8 hours at a very low f-number (achieved with filters) and to have the light source move in such a way that it simulated the effect of sunlight over an 8-hour period, which is how long the very first photo in history took in actual sunlight.

Are you sure "Wanderlicht" is a "piece of equipment"?

mobile light source [light painting technique]

The definitions below explain the technique. It seems either the light source or the camera are mobile/being moved - in your case, the light, I suppose.

Wanderlicht
Ein Wanderlicht ist eine mobile Lichtquelle, welche die tägliche Bewegung der Sonne und deren Einstrahlung simuliert.

Light painting, also known as light drawing is a photographic technique in which exposures are made usually at night or in a darkened room by moving a light source or by moving the camera.

agree Kim Metzger : But I'm not sure about light painting. From what I've seen, this technique is used for nighttime photography.
