German term

Verigelungen

German to English Marketing Photography/Imaging (& Graphic Arts) corporate style guide
I'm curious about how common this expression is and what it might be called in English.

Discussion

Nicole Schnell Aug 9, 2005:
If you need to refer to the little lines, I would simply add "with measurements", that should cover it. Don't think it's necessary, though. I got curious and called collegues, they said scale diagram sounds fine.
Non-ProZ.com Aug 9, 2005:
I think Nicole's answer is right, but I wonder if there's a need/way to refer to the dashed line surrounding the image? The client couldn't help. What is the point of this outline, anyway?
Non-ProZ.com Aug 6, 2005:
Since "Verigelungen" itself doesn't pull up any relevant googles, I guess it's not exactly everyday graphics-speak. I suspect they might be talking about "text wrapped" objects as in InDesign, where you draw a boundary around your graphic so surrounding text bounces off and wraps around the graphic instead of running over or under it. Guess I'll ask for more clarification. Do either of you know what "text wrap" is called in Quark?

Please take a quick look at the diagrams on the web sites below (architecture/patents in this case, but you get the idea). That's why you can enlarge or reduce those diagrams/illustrations and they will still be true to size. "Verigelung" isn't quite a technical term, rather a cute nickname for this technique. Hope this helps (I studied Graphik design in Germany)

hedgehogging

At least one (and possibly the only one) group appears to use the term this way ; )

The technique of placing directed line segments at grid points, known as hedgehogging, has been used for some time as a tool for visualizing two dimensional vector fields. We provide a means of rapidly rendering a slice of a three dimensional field, suitable for a bilevel display. Shape and shadowing are used to disambiguate orientation. Liberal use of lookup tables makes the technique very fast.

basically nothing more than a guess (looks like a hedgehog), but gets a surprising no. of googles in graphics context
