English term or phrase: maturing
Glass is inorganic, amorphous melt.
Pure quartz glass contains only silicon oxide (SiO2).
Most commonly used raw materials are: Silicon (SiO2), lime (CaCO3), soda (Na2CO3), potash (CaC03) and some other raw materials as barium carbonate.
Iittala base mass (glass) contains: 60% Si, 20% soda and potash, 5 % lime and rest 15 % other substance.
To make better quality glass other raw materials are added into glass: zinc, lithium carbonate, antimony, erbium, cobalt etc.
Raw materials are melted in 1380 - 1450°C temperature.
Raw materials are filled continuously into van oven or in batch into pot furnace.
Melting process is divided into 3 stages: melting, clearing (purifying) and maturing.
Purifying and maturing is needed to get bubble free and homogeneous mass in order to make high quality products.
Glass melting and process needs skills and special competence because there are many variables from raw materials to high temperature control process.
