I am currently working on a short legal translation for an advertising firm and am having problems with the above phrase.

The context is as follows:

"Indien een contract gesloten is door een reclamebemiddelaar ten behoeve van een adverteerder, heeft de reclamebemiddelaar in geval van faillissement van de adverteerder het recht om i.p.v. betaling van de resterende gecontracteerde verplichting te volstaan met onmiddellijke betaling van een bijberekening tot een lagere contractstaffel waarbij wel aan de bij de contractstaffel behorende afnameverplichting voldaan zou zijn geweest."

Explanation:
staffelmethode: [boekh.] manier van renteberekening in rekening-courant, door bij elke wijziging het saldo te bepalen en daarvan de interest te berekenen gedurende de tijd dat dit onveranderd blijft
Knowing that the French transl. is "échelle", I suggest scale.
