Problems with OTF files with both SDLx Trados 2007 on Vista

Each time I worked with Trados or SDLX and saved the files, a new OTF file is created for each project and appear on my desktop. I cannot delete or move those files AT ALL because it says the following:

"The action cannot be completed because the file is open in another program. Close the file and try again."

I tried to close these files but I cannot locate them. I close any TM before I save a project. Now, my desktop is getting full of these OTF files which I can't m... See more
Each time I worked with Trados or SDLX and saved the files, a new OTF file is created for each project and appear on my desktop. I cannot delete or move those files AT ALL because it says the following:

I tried to close these files but I cannot locate them. I close any TM before I save a project. Now, my desktop is getting full of these OTF files which I can't move to a folder.

I also tried to find a solution but to no avail. I then decided to un- install and re-install SDL Trados 2007 to close the files and delete them. It did not work either. Now, I cannot install Synergy and the whole CAT tool runs on demo. I also tried to return the license but I got the following message:

"Your license cannot be returned because you have previously made too many attempts to return your license. In the interests of security, please contact your local support representative who can validate your account and authorize this return, and help you with your registration. When
Fulfilment ID: FID_8D44F65_ 94F14A6B6C5_ _5524"

I should add that I had a previous HP laptop that crashed. I was then unable to return the license from the HP laptop. Now, I am having problems to install Trados SDLx 2007 again (it runs on demo) on the new laptop. Moreover, this is a Vista; I need to get more familiar with the OS.

I also contacted SDL Trados customer service but not much help from them so far. I also sent another email to one of their technicians and I am hoping that he will contact me soon with a solution. I have never had these sorts of problem before while using SDlx or Trados.

So I must have done something wrong somewhere but where and how can I fix it. ▲ Collapse

Found a solution for the OTF files Aug 25, 2008

Here is what I received from SDL Trados support.

For the OTF problem, please try deleting the following two values from the registry.

1) Click Start -> Run, enter regedit, and then press Enter;
2) Delete the following two values:
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.otf
Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.otf
NOTE: The Regedit is very important for the Operation System; you’d better ask ... See more
Here is what I received from SDL Trados support.

For the OTF problem, please try deleting the following two values from the registry.

1) Click Start -> Run, enter regedit, and then press Enter;
2) Delete the following two values:
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.otf
Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.otf
NOTE: The Regedit is very important for the Operation System; you’d better ask an IT specialist’s help.

The reason why you could not remove or delete these files is that these files are protected by Windows Vista, however, you can download Unlocker 1.8.5 from the following site and this will allow you to delete the files:

It worked but I still don't understand how the OTF files ended up on my desktop. ▲ Collapse
