mysterious or supernatural

This is the dictionary meaning of the word uncanny.

It is a sarcastic comment on the unsavoury intelligence gathering techniques employed by the financial press of today.

The ancient merchants and the modern financial press are being compared here and neither of them is a glory to the other!

neutral Can Altinbay : You must consider context.//You are correct in your assessment, but your answer doesn't fit.

The way I see it is, although it is a description of 1400 AD, the author is comparing ancient systems with something quite of his times, and at the same time making a wry comment on his own times, i.e., the financial press.
disagree RHELLER : neither mysterious nor supernatural - way way off

neutral pcovs : I guess more 'disturbing' or 'worrying' than mysterious and supernatural (which don't reflect your point) in this context. Your point, though, is on the mark to my mind ;o)

I was not suggesting "mysterious" or "supernatural" as the meaning of uncanny in this context, but just pointing out the word's dictionary meaning. Unfortunately, people have not caught on to this this point.
