neutral Tony M : Adding the 'trend', Francis, runs the risk of 'over-interpreting', IMHO

forecast

This is a statistical method whereby one uses already existant data to project the value of a dependent variable based on expected changes in certain independent variables.

A forecast differs from a projection in so far as a projection remains within the range of already existant data for the independent variables.

A trend projection or trend forecast is based on single variables of a time series; no cause and effect relationship is hypothesized.

A simulation is a kind of forecast that uses feedback mechanisms -- namely, changes in the dependent variable effect the independent variables as one moves forward in time. Simulations are a kind of dynamic modelling and differ structurally from their more static counter parts.

As simulation is used in the same breadth with the French word \"projection\", forecast is the more appropriate English term.

Upon further thought the more correct word for projection as I have used it above is prediction. The word projection could be used to replace either prediction or forecast and is therefore too general for the case at hand. I apologize for any confusion that may result.
