Emerging-market investors’ love affair with Mexico is showing signs of strain as sluggish growth is weighing on the outlook for the country’s stock market.
Mexican shares rallied to record highs in January, as optimism about policies promoted by the newly elected president, Enrique Peña Nieto, bolstered the country’s allure as emerging markets were heating up.
But the benchmark IPC 35-stock index has since slumped 12% as of Tuesday. Despite the selloff, many money managers outside of Mexico say shares there are overvalued given a surprise slowdown in the economy this year. While many investors continue to praise Mr. Peña Nieto for his efforts to boost competition in certain sectors, they are wary of making bets on companies whose profits could suffer as a result.
Shares of América Móvil SAB, Latin America’s largest wireless provider and the biggest component of the IPC index, have declined 9% so far this year, partly due to concerns about rising competition.
“I’d buy Mexico from a long-term macroeconomic perspective. But am I buying the stock market? No,” said Geoffrey Pazzanese, who helps manage $780 million in assets at Federated Global Investment Management in New York. He reduced his funds’ Mexico exposure to zero as of June versus an overweight position in August 2012.
In the six months through Oct. 9, global fund managers have yanked $1.16 billion from Mexico’s stock market, according to data provider EPFR Global. In the previous six-month period, inflows totaled $4.22 billion.
Mexican shares now trade around 17 times earnings over the next year, as measured by the MSCI Mexico Investable Market Index. That compares with an average price/earnings ratio of 12 for emerging-market stocks. For the S&P 500, which is up 19% so far this year, the P/E ratio is 14.4, according to FactSet.
“We can find relatively attractive stocks elsewhere, in places like Russia, South Africa, Indonesia and Brazil,” says James Donald, manager of Lazard Asset Management’s $14 billion Emerging Markets Equity Portfolio. The fund has relatively little exposure to Mexico.

Two Italian divisions, Pavia and Trieste, had failed to break through the mined area, being continuously battered by the French, who had disrupted their supply line around Bir Hakeim and thus left them without provisions or equipment.
On the afternoon of May 29, Rommel received the unpleasant news that General Cruewell had been shot down as he flew over the Gazala positions on a visit to the 10th Italian Army Corps.
Later there was word that he had been captured by the British. Rommel’s chief of staff, General Gause, had also been wounded, as well as Colonel Westphal, his Chief of Operations. Fortunately for Rommel, Field Marshal Kesselring showed up on a visit to Cruewell’s headquarters shortly after Cruewell went missing. Von Mellenthin then persuaded Kesselring to take command of Cruewell’s forces for a few days, thus keeping the Germans in control of the battle rather than the Italians.
The energetic and intelligent Colonel Bayerlein became Rommel’s Chief of Staff. The Italian infantry of the 10th Corps had some successful attempts at clearing mines overnight, from May 29 to May 30. Meanwhile, Rommel decided to enter the area between Knightsbridge and Sidi Muftah, aptly nicknamed “The Cauldron”.
The discovery of a bunker belonging to the 150th British Brigade was an unpleasant surprise to Rommel, as his Intelligence Service was unaware of its existence. E lá fui eu disposto a cumprir com meu dever. Saímos cerca das 19 horas e já tínhamos avançado cerca de trinta quilômetros, quando divisamos sinais luminosos à distância. Julgamos que fossem os britânicos que estivessem empregando a nossa senha, perguntando quem se aproximava. Respondemos com os mesmos sinais e avançamos. Muito tarde verificamos que tínhamos caído em uma emboscada. Estávamos cercados. Os alemães haviam se apoderado de foguetes dos ingleses e descoberto a senha, empregando-a para nos atrair. Não pudemos reagir porque nem tempo tivemos de saltar dos caminhões em que estávamos, colocar os canhões e tanks em formação de combate. Ficamos paralisados de surpresa. Éramos prisioneiros dos nazistas e eu amaldiçoei este instante. Os nossos captores revistaram-nos e exigiram-nos a entrega das armas e documentos iluminando nossos rostos com lanternas elétricas portáteis. So there I went, willing to do my duty. We left in our trucks at about 7:00 p.m. and had already covered some twenty miles when we saw light signals in the distance. We thought it was the British who were beaming us our password and asking who was approaching. We answered with the same signals and moved forward. Alas, too late we found out we had fallen into an ambush and were surrounded on all sides. The Germans had taken possession of some signaling rockets from the English, discovered the password and used them to lure us. It was impossible to react – we just did not have time to jump off our trucks and set the cannons and tanks in combat formation. We were paralyzed by surprise. Suddenly we were prisoners of the Nazis, and I cursed that moment. Our captors searched us and demanded that we hand them our guns and documents, shining their portable electric flashlights in our faces. However, our commander, a lieutenant, had a revolver inside his uniform, hidden beneath his cape and instead of taking out his papers he drew out his gun and fired a shot right into the chest of a German soldier directly in front of him – who, as he fell, still had time to turn his rifle on our lieutenant and shoot. A tremendous brouhaha then followed. One of our soldiers, a veteran legionnaire from the Norwegian Campaign and other campaigns, had hidden some hand grenades in the sand; he bent down and started throwing them at the stunned Nazis, but the shrapnel struck many of our companions as well. Meanwhile a gigantic Abyssinian man ran behind a truck, quickly set up his howitzer there and proceeded to spit fire at everybody in sight, both friends and foes. Suddenly, above all that din we heard the order “Each for himself!” – and shooting from our automatic weapons we made our way through our opponents and fled, running through the desert aimlessly, totally disoriented, surrounded by deep darkness.
That was my baptism of fire, and I have to say that in the face of danger I did what was within my reach and fought, as all the others did, for freedom.
