the locution "somewhere between dire straits and dead" cannot be translated literally in Italian. Locutions in general cannot be literally translated because they have their own specific meaning. The locution more similar to the one used in the text is 'tra l'incudine e il martello" that means a situation very dangerous in which two perils are menacing the outcome of an action
