Ursache:
Fast alle innerhalb von Bauteilgehäusen eingesetzten Kunststoffe sind hygroskopisch.
Je nach Hygroskopieverhalten kommt es zu einer mehr oder minder ausgeprägten Ansammlung von Wasser (das meist in Form von Wasserdampf aus der Umgebung aufgenommen wurde) im Innern der Bauteile.
Der Affinität dieses Wassermolekültransports im jeweiligen Bauteil wird dabei meist indirekt mit dem sogenannten MSL (moisture senitivity level) Rechnung getragen.
Die im Bauelement eingeschlossene Feuchtigkeit kann während des Lötwärmeeintrags nicht schadfrei entweichen.
Steigt im Inneren des Bauelements der Dampfdruck der eingeschlossenen Wassercluster (Wassernester) über einen gewissen Wert an, so kommt es entweder zu einem „unspektakulären“, da von außen nicht sichtbaren, Entweichen entlang eines bevorzugten Pfads oder aber zu einem Aufblähen des Gehäuses durch den massiv ansteigenden Druck im Innern.
Der letztgenannte Effekt wird oftmals auch als Popcorning bezeichnet.
Besonders heikel ist dabei die nicht immer eindeutige Diagnose, inwieweit Popcorning stattgefunden hat, da diese Vorgänge oftmals rein visuell eine wenig signifikante Ausprägung haben, aber dennoch massive Degradation (wie etwa Bondabrisse) im Innern des Bauelements hervorrufen können.
Vermeidung:
Beachtung der Rücktrocknungsnotwendigkeit bei feuchteempfindlichen Komponenten (MSL-Kennung) und bestückten Baugruppen im Falle einer Nacharbeit. Hierzu gilt es im Vorfeld genau zu sondieren, welche Teilbereiche der Baugruppe einem Reflowstress unterzogen werden.
Es definiert dabei immer das feuchteempfindlichste Bauteil (größter MSL-Wert) die grundsätzliche Notwendigkeit und Ausführung einer Rücktrocknung.

Cause:
Almost all plastics used inside component housings are hygroscopic.
Depending on hygroscopic behavior the result is a more or less pronounced accumulation of water (absorbed mostly in the form of water vapor from the environment) in the component's innards.
The affinity of this water molecule transport in any given component is accounted for mostly indirectly with the MSL (moisture sensitivity level).
During exposure to solder heat, the moisture trapped in the component is unable to escape without causing damage.
Should the vapor pressure of the trapped water cluster (water nest) rise above a certain level, the result is either an "unspectacular" (i.e. invisible from the outside) release along a path of least resistance or a bloating of the casing due to the enormous pressure inside.
The latter effect is often known as popcorning.
It is especially tricky to diagnose the extent of popcorning, since these events are frequently not pronounced on the surface, yet cause severe damage (for instance, bond tears) to the component internally.
Prevention:
Bear in mind the necessity of re-drying moisture-sensitive components (MSL label) and populated assemblies in the case of a rework, in which case it is prudent to explore exactly which subsections of the assembly will undergo a reflow stress.
The re-drying requirement is always determined by the most temperature sensitive component (highest MSL value).
