English to Spanish: A Statement of What We Believe At XXX Church
Source text - English As a congregation one of the most important things that defines and identifies us is our statement of faith. This is the biblical doctrine we believe and teach as a church, and our unity as a congregation requires that we hold to a common body of biblical truth.
These corporate doctrinal teachings could be simply termed “what we believe”, and they encompass the foundational teachings of the Christian faith as we understand them.
Each of us as individuals, of course, has our own personal convictions regarding what we believe the Scriptures teach. One could designate these into areas of “what I believe” and “what you believe”. We have ilustrated these as three circles, one circle representing all that I believe, and another circle representing all that you believe (please see the diagram below). The area of overlap between my circle of doctrinal belief and your circle of doctrinal belief is “what we believe” together. This is what we hold in common.
When we speak of our church’s doctrinal teaching we are referring to this area of "what we believe.” This relatively large area of common belief is central to our identity as a church, and to our corporate unity. It is therefore important that each of us who consider XXX Church to be our church home, or who are considering making Grace their church home, know and understand what this circle of common doctrinal beliefs encompasses. It is also important that each of us be in substantial, if not full agreement with these doctrinal beliefs, and that in either case we are committed and careful to not be divisive regarding any areas where there are differences.
II. The Core of What We Believe
The center of our common faith as a church, the “what we believe” circle described above, is our core doctrinal convictions. We have chosen to adopt for our core beliefs five historic statements that are known as the “Great Sole’s” of the Protestant Reformation (“sola” es the Latin word for “only”, so you may lass them the “Great Only’s”). These Five foundational statements are widely considered to express the essence of the biblical truths recovered and restored in the Reformation, and as such they make up our own core beliefs. In this sense, we are as a church fundamentally “Protestant” and “Reformational”, and these core beliefs are the “reformation tradition” in which we stand. The Great Sola’s are as follows:
“Sola Scriptura”, Latin for “Scripture Alone” – We believe in the infalibility, inerrancy, sufficiency and full inspiration of both the Old and New Testaments. All doctrine, practices, and traditions of the church are subject to the rule and authority of the Scripture.
“Sola Cristo”, Latin for “Christ Alone” – We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the second person of the Trinity, and that the person and work of Christ are the only means of salvation for mankind. All aspects of our salvation come from our union with Christ, and not our membership in any church or through the mediation of any man.
“Sola Gratia”, Latin for “Grace Alone” – We believe in Christ’s atoning and substitutionary work on the cross as the basis of our reconciliation with God. Therefore, our salvation is by God’s grace alone, and not on the basis of any good works or righteousness on our part, or because of our participation in the sacraments or religious activity.
“Sola Fide”, Latin for “Faith Alone” – We believe that salvation is received by those who have an active and true faith in Christ as Savior and Lord, and in His finished work on the cross. Saving faith is a gift from God leading us to a personal response to the Gospel.
“Soli Deo Gloria”, Latin for “Glory to God Alone” – We believe that all things exist for the glory of God and that He will be glorified in and through all things. Therefore, we are to do everything for the honor and glory of our loving Redeemer.
Translation - Spanish Una de las cosas más importantes que nos define e identifica como congregación es nuestra declaración de fe. Ésta es la doctrina bíblica que creemos y enseñamos como iglesia y nuestra unidad como congregación requiere que nos atengamos a un cuerpo común de verdad bíblica.
Estas enseñanzas doctrinales corporativas simplemente podrían ser llamadas “lo que creemos” y comprenden las enseñanzas fundacionales de la fe cristiana, como nosotros las entendemos.
Por supuesto, cada uno de nosotros como individuo tiene sus propias convicciones en relación con lo que creemos que las Escrituras enseñan. Éstas se pueden diferenciar en dos áreas de “lo que yo creo” y “lo que tú crees”. Hemos ilustrado esto como tres círculos, representando uno de ellos todo lo que yo creo y otro círculo todo lo que tú crees (ver el diagrama abajo). Si hablamos de las enseñanzas doctrinales de nuestra iglesia, nos referimos a esta área de “lo que creemos”. Esta área relativamente grande de creencia en común es el centro de nuestra identidad como iglesia y de nuestra unidad corporativa. Por ello es importante que cada uno de nosotros que consideramos a la iglesia XXX como nuestra propia iglesia o los que están considerando hacer de XXX su iglesia, sepamos y comprendamos lo que comprende este círculo de creencias doctrinales comunes. También es importante que cada uno de nosotros esté sustancialmente, si no totalmente de acuerdo, con estas creencias doctrinales y que en cualquiera de los casos estemos comprometidos y tengamos cuidado de no dividir cuando en alguna de estas áreas existan diferencias.
II. Lo Medular de lo que Creemos
El centro de nuestra fe en común como iglesia, el círculo de “lo que creemos” descrito arriba, son nuestras convicciones doctrinales medulares. Para nuestras creencias medulares hemos decidido adoptar cinco declaraciones históricas que son conocidas como las “Grandes Solas”de la Reformación Protestante (El término “sola” es una palabra del latín y significa “solamente”, de modo que se les puede llamar las “Grandes Solas”). Estas Cinco declaraciones básicas son ampliamente reconocidas como las que expresan la esencia de las verdades bíblicas recuperadas y restauradas durante la Reformación y como tales ellas constituyen nuestro propio credo medular. En este sentido como iglesia somos fundamentalmente “Protestantes” y “de la Reformación”, y estas creencias medulares conforman la “tradición de la reformación” que sostenemos. Las Grandes Solas son las siguientes:
“Sola Scriptura”, latín para “Solamente la Escritura” – Creemos en la infalibilidad, suficiencia y plena inspiración de ambos el Antiguo y el Nuevo Testamento. Todas las doctrinas, prácticas y tradiciones de la iglesia están sujetas al gobierno y a la autoridad de las Escrituras.
“Sola Cristo”, latín para “Solamente Cristo” – Creemos que Jesucristo es el Hijo de Dios, la segunda persona de la Trinidad, y que la persona y obra de Cristo son los únicos medios para la salvación de la humanidad. Todos los aspectos de nuestra salvación vienen de nuestra unión con Cristo y no de nuestra membresía en alguna iglesia o a través de la intermediación de algún hombre.
“Sola Gratia, latín para “Solamente Gracia” – Creemos en la obra expiatoria y sustitutiva en la cruz como base para nuestra reconciliación con Dios. Por ello nuestra salvación es por la gracia de Dios solamente y no en base a alguna buena obra o justicia de parte nuestra o por nuestra participación en los sacramentos o la actividad religiosa.
“Sola Fide”, latín para “Fe solamente” – Creemos que la salvación es recibida por aquellos que tienen una fe activa y verdadera en Cristo como Salvador y Señor y en su obra completada en la cruz. La fe salvadora es un don de Dios que nos guía hacia una respuesta personal al Evangelio.
“Soli Deo Gloria”, latín para “Solamente a Dios sea la Gloria” – Creemos que todas las cosas existen para la gloria de Dios y que El será glorificado en y por todas las cosas Por lo tanto debemos hacer todo para la honra y para la gloria de nuestro Salvador que nos ama.
