Announcing the first ever humanitarian Translate-a-Thon

Announcing the first ever humanitarian Translate-a-Thon

TWB partners with the IFRC and Kilgray – memoQ to translate disaster messages

A large scale, transcontinental charity translation project has been announced by Translators without Borders and Kilgray - memoQ: An International Translate-a-Thon! Volunteer translators will collaborate online at two industry events to translate disaster risk reduction messages from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies into as many languages as possible.

During 2010 alone, more than 208 million people were affected by natural disasters. In an effort to better prepare populations for earthquakes, floods, and other threats, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has focused on creating disaster risk reduction (DRR) information to be distributed worldwide. Disaster risk reduction (DRR) initiatives encapsulate the growing recognition that relief is not enough in mitigating disasters and that well-informed communities in fact are the key to reducing the impact and severity of natural hazards when they strike.

As part of its DRR initiatives, the IFRC has created a booklet of Disaster Risk Reduction messages for people to use anywhere in the world.

In recognizing the importance of translating the messages, the IFRC is working with Translators without Borders to provide these critical messages in the languages spoken by at-risk populations. Currently the messages are only in English, but the goal is to offer them to many communities in their own languages by 2015. The work of volunteer translators during the TWB/Kilgray-memoQ Disaster Risk Reduction Translate-a-thon will make that possible.

The Translate-a-thon will take place at the 54th Annual ATA Conference in San Antonio, 6 – 9 November, and simultaneously at tcworld in Wiesbaden, 6 – 8 November.  All contributors will receive a special gift.  Volunteers who cannot attend one of the events also can contribute online.

Contribute to the project by visiting www.donatetranslations.com and registering as a translator or reviewer. Please help us spread the word using #donatetranslations on Twitter or pass this message along to translators around the world!
