Bio
My name is Bárbara C. Alvarez and I am a Certified Translator. I graduated from the National University of La Plata (UNLP), Argentina in 2013.My mother tongue is Spanish and I work with both Spanish-English / English-Spanish translations. I have started my carreer as a freelance translator, both with direct clients and though translation agencies. My fields of expertise include: Scientific and Technical translations, Medicine, Pharmacology, Business, Finance and Legal translations (contracts, certificates, powers of attorney, etc.) I work with CAT Tools: Trados Studio, Tag Editor, Idiom, Wordbee, XBench.
I do not regard translation as a mere job, but as a passion, a way of living. As the writer and translator Mariano Antolín Rato very accurately said: "Translation is one of the few human activities in which the impossible occurs by principle.”
Since I have always enjoyed teaching, I am also studying to graduate as a Teacher of English at the National University of La Plata (UNLP). I am highly experienced in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL): I have worked for several language centres and I am currently working as a Children Coordinator at Home Intercultural Learning in La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Not only do I teach children, but also adults who are studying to sit for international exams such as First Certificate, CAE, Proficiency, TOEFL, etc.
I have had the chance to strike a balance between the two things that I enjoy the most: translating and teaching. It would be impossible for me to live without one of them.
For me, every translation is a challenge to be solved, a jigsaw waiting to be pieced together. As a translator, I am highly responsible, organized and motivated. I meet deadlines and respect the client's requirements.
Teaching, on the other hand, brings me a lot of satisfaction and I have to admit that most of the times students teach me more things than I would have expected: love, values, respect. As a teacher, I am very dynamic, encouraging and friendly.
I am in love with my jobs both as a freelance translator and a teacher, and I believe that is reflected in my work.
