English to Italian: BIODIESEL General field: Tech/Engineering Detailed field: Environment & Ecology
Source text - English Biodiesel is any form of biologically based, diesel-like fuel that can replace petroleum based diesel. Bio-ethanol is the other major liquid bio-fuel which can supplement petrol.
As vehicle fuel prices continue to rise, and the struggle to combat global warming continues, the fledgling biodiesel industry poses an attractive alternative to finite petroleum sources. Primary research and development has focused on well-known and long-farmed crops like soybean, canola, corn, and palm, but the feasibility of these sources of biodiesel are limited by a number of practical factors, namely production costs, the amount of required arable land, and a relatively low yield of oil. For example, soybean, the current main biodiesel crop, produces a bodyweight of only 20% oil. On the other hand, strains of microalgae can produce a retrievable oil yield of up to 75% of algal weight, and since a volume of algae can double in volume in a single day, the oil can be harvested more often, with an estimated yearly production of up to 10,000 gallon of oil for each acre of algae. The remaining biomass could potentially be used as fertilizer or animal feed.
Furthermore, since algae do not need arable land, like other bio-fuels from cultivated plants such as maize, it follows that algal power plants could be set up in arid or salinated land. This would have less impact on local biodiversity. Algal oil, consisting of a mix of fatty acids and lipids, is constructed from the products of plant photosynthesis, and it is therefore a carbon neutral form of biodiesel – i.e. its combustion only releases the carbon which was taken from atmospheric carbon dioxide during the algae’s life.
This contrasts to conventional fossil fuels, which release long stored carbon upon combustion, and therefore continually add to the total volume of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere.
Despite its heady potential, a major downside of algal biodiesel appears to be its overall cost: estimates show that producing algal biodiesel is still more expensive than producing crop biodiesel.
However, neither crop bio-fuels nor petroleum will meet our energy need in the future - as crop bio-fuel takes up large arable spaces invaluable to food production and petroleum supplies are predicted to soon tail off and become scarce and expensive. This might result, therefore, in these limitations relative to algal biodiesel production representing merely a challenge for future research to tackle. With the development of algal bio-refineries, identification of beneficial growing factors, stabilising environmental factors, and new strains of algae, researchers appear confident that improvements will be achieved. There is also the possibility of creating hybrid or engineered strains of algae to improve yield and lower production costs. In light of the growing exclusivity of petroleum and the practical problems of crop bio-fuel, the future for diesel looks definitely microbial.
Translation - Italian Per biodiesel si intende qualsiasi forma di carburante di origine biologica, simile al diesel, in grado di rimpiazzare il diesel di origine petrolifera. Il bioetanolo rappresenta l'altro principale esempio di biocombustibile liquido alternativo.
In seguito al continuo aumento dei prezzi dei carburanti e alla difficoltà di contrastare il riscaldamento globale, la nascente industria del biodiesel si presenta certamente come un’allettante alternativa rispetto alle limitate risorse petrolifere. Ricerca e sviluppo si sono principalmente focalizzati su colture ben note e da lungo tempo praticate quali soia, colza, grano e palma; tuttavia, l’effettivo sfruttamento di queste fonti di biodiesel rimane limitato da un numero di fattori pratici, quali i costi di produzione, la enorme quantità di terre coltivabili necessarie e una resa oleica relativamente bassa.
A titolo d’esempio, la soia, attualmente la principale coltura per biodiesel, produce un una quantità d’olio pari soltanto al 20% della sua massa; al contrario, alcuni ceppi di microalghe possono arrivare a produrne fino al 75% del loro peso algale e, poiché è possibile in un solo giorno raddoppiare il volume delle alghe, ne consegue che si riuscirà a estrarre una maggiore quantità di olio più frequentemente, con stime di produzione annuali che arrivano fino a circa 90.000 litri di olio per ogni ettaro di coltivazione. La biomassa residua potrebbe essere riutilizzata come fertilizzante o per nutrire gli animali.
Inoltre, siccome le alghe non necessitano di terreni coltivabili come invece accade per altri biocarburanti derivati da colture come il mais, sarebbe /diventerebbe quindi possibile installare le centrali elettriche ad alghe anche su suoli aridi o salini, causando un minore impatto sulla biodiversità locale. L’olio algale, composto di acidi grassi e lipidi, è formato dai prodotti della fotosintesi clorofilliana ed è quindi una forma di biodiesel “carbon neutral”: la sua combustione rilascia esattamente la stessa quantità di anidride carbonica che è stata immagazzinata dall’alga durante il suo ciclo vitale.
Questo non accade, invece, per i combustibili fossili tradizionali, la cui combustione rilascia una quantità maggiore di CO2, immagazzinata durante un periodo di tempo più lungo va ad incrementare il volume totale di anidride carbonica presente nell’atmosfera.
Pur avendo un potenziale straordinario, il biodiesel da alghe sembra presentare un inconveniente molto grave: il costo complessivo; stime mostrano che produrre biodiesel da alghe rimane ancora più costoso che produrre biodiesel a partire da colture.
Tuttavia, in futuro né i biocarburanti prodotti da colture né il petrolio riusciranno a soddisfare il fabbisogno di energia globale. Infatti, il biocarburante derivato da colture sottrae all’agricoltura grandi superfici di terreno coltivabile prezioso per l’agricoltura, mentre le risorse petrolifere sono destinate a esaurirsi e presto diventeranno scarse e costose. Questo contribuirebbe, quindi, a far sì che le limitazioni relative alla produzione di biodiesel da alghe diventino semplicemente una sfida da affrontare nelle ricerche a venire. I ricercatori si mostrano sicuri riguardo a progressi futuri soprattutto in seguito allo sviluppo di bioraffinerie algali, all’identificazione di fattori di crescita positivi, alla stabilizzazione di fattori ambientali e alla scoperta di nuovi ceppi algali. Si prevede, inoltre, la possibilità di creare varietà algali ibride o geneticamente modificate in modo da aumentare la resa oleica e allo stesso tempo diminuire i costi di produzione. Alla luce dell’aumento dei prezzi delle risorse petrolifere che diventano sempre più scarse e dei problemi pratici relativi ai biocarburanti da colture, il futuro del diesel non potrà che essere avviarsi verso una fase “microbica”.
