French term or phrase: prélèvement orienté
A pathology report on examination of skin specimens refers to "prélèvement cutané de 1 x 2 x 3 cm", to "prélèvement cutané orienté de 1 x 2 x 3 cm" and to "prélèvement orienté de 1 x 2 x 3 cm". I'm flummoxed by what "orienté" means in this context. Can anyone shed any light on this? TIA.

biopsy,with orientation indicated
Explanation:
When a skin biopsy is submitted with its orientation indicated or marked, it means that its position in the patient is given to the pathologist for the record and better interpretation of the results. Orientation refers to its position in the patient: superior margin, medial, lateral, etc. Standard practice for surgical pathology, including skin specimens.

The term "orienté" does have two meanings depending on the source of the specimen and the clinical setting. In skin biopsies measuring in centimeters, it is as above. In pinpoint collections (fine needle aspirates, other micro-sampling), it may mean targeted in the sense guided precisely and its localisation determined by other means, often imaging studies. That is not the case in this question.

selective sampling

Explanation:
acccording to the Grand Dictionnaire, orienté is translated as selective in medical context and I did find one reference in both French and English which might substantiate it

prelevement oriente
targeted sample

Explanation:
Judging from French sites where the phrase appears, "orienté" seems to be used in the sense of "[precisely] targeted". See for example:

By the way, "brossage distal protégé" may be "protected specimen brush".
