Thank you, Els, for informing us about this.
As a matter of fact, in the last couple of months I very often got the very frustrating "not accessible" at Eurodicautom so I started wondering how far IATE had come. Let's hope that IATE has far better resources and doesn't crash when 150,000+ translators at ProZ are searching at the same time

I hadn't heard about IATE before. I tried it with many terms and I may say the results were accurate!

I'd just about given up on IATE access and hadn't checked it for months - so thanks for reminding me.
Eurodicautom's pretty out of date now so let's hope IATE has updated terminology and doesn't keep timing out when busy!!

I was so happy about this - until I tried accessing it. Seems that the publicity over here and also probably all over the internet sent too much traffic their way, because the page has been loading for a few minutes now, but it is still just one empty page... I think too many of us are checking it out.
That's OK, I'll just wait in line... I hope they will come up with a solution for this if this is really a traffic problem. What use is a database when you can't access it? | | | |

Thank you Els!
My Bible used to be Eurodicautom, but I've done some queries in IATE and I find it very intresting!
Thank you for sharing this info with us!
Ciao

Thank you for telling us about this, I'm sure we'll all want to check it out and consider using it in the future.
Opening the website and coming to it "cold", I find a lack of information or links on the website itself to explain to users WHAT this is, its CHARACTERISTICS, WHO has done it, HOW, etc. It's just "there". I trust that given a little time they will think of fixing all that.
For now, as a professional translator needing high-standard, reliable tools, I need to know a few of these things in order to comfortable with IATE. For example, I want to know what it "means" when the database provides me with an equivalent for a term, or indeed when fails to provide another possible equivalent (which may be the one I was thinking of using). What are the sources of the database? What type of authority can it be considered to have. In other words, how "blindly" am I to trust its information. Ultimately, it is up to me as the user to decide how far to trust it, I know that, but in order to make such a decision I need to know more about its background and, indeed, its purpose. Which brings me back to my initial questions.
Sorry to be a grouch! Anyone agree with me?
